Congressman Bob Etheridge's campaign is slamming the National Republican Congressional Committee after it admitted being behind a now notorious video ambush of him on YouTube.
The video shows Etheridge manhandling two young men that approach him with a camera in Washington.
"This disingenuous, post-election admission confirms what the Etheridge campaign suspected all along: two paid Republican operatives were part of a long-term strategy to defeat dedicated public servants like Bob Etheridge -- not by honestly debating the issues, but by engaging in lies, deception and dirty tricks," Etheridge for Congress campaign spokesman Mike Davis said in a statement
Upon its release, the video garnered national attention, raising the profile of republican challenger Renee Ellmers.
Now, Ellmers has a narrow lead over Etheridge with a recount likely for the District-2 seat.
Ellmers said she didn't know the NRCC was responsible until she released a campaign video asking for Etheridge to personally apologize to the young men.
"That's when they [NRCC] came back and said we really don't want these boys identities brought out," Ellmers said.
Ellmers said she didn't want to play games so she went public with what she knew. And that may have been the reason the NRCC wasn't her biggest supporter.
"They didn't like the way we were doing things," Ellmers said.
Even now -- as she's heading into a likely recount -- the NRCC was reluctant at first to help, but Friday offered money and support.
On the other side, Etheridge's campaign slammed the NRCC, calling this a devious plan that mocks the voters.
Andrew Whalen with the North Carolina Democratic Party said he wasn't surprised to learn who was behind the video.
"What's more surprising is that they lied to the voters about this for 6-7 months," said Whalen.
Both candidates believe they will be victorious when the votes are canvassed on Nov. 12.
If the margin between the two stays below one-percent there will be a recount.
