Well I had a dreadful day yesterday.

I went in to get my weekly allergy shot. No big deal. After all, I get one EVERY week. I got my shot, put a cold pak on it and when time for waiting was over, went to see Tim at work. I was there only for a minute or two and my stomach started feeling quesy. I asked him if he had water and he didn't in his office. I said that it wasn't a big deal, that I'd just get some at home. Then I left. Still no bigge, really. However, about two blocks away, it hit me....

I started wheezing. A LOT! I don't have asthma. My eyes were a little itchy and my throat hurt. I called my doctor's office and a woman from the front desk started looking for the nurse that does my injections, but couldn't get her or another nurse. Thankfully, I had already started driving back to the office. The front desk woman came on the phone and said that she was still looking. I told her to never mind it, that I was really close to the office.

By the time I got inside, the wheezing was full on and I could barely breathe. It was finally clear. I was having a major allergic reaction to my allergy shot. They helped me immediately, thank God. After all was said and done, I had two shots of Epinephrine, one of Benedryl and a Phenergen pill. I've never had that happen so badly before. Tim got off work early because I wanted him to be with me and they didn't want me driving. They're going to call my allergy center and return the vial to see what's up with it.

Now I'm just relaxing and breathing normally again.

Where was this? I don't know any doctors in Front Royal. If it was Amherst Family Practice in Winchester, that makes me feel pretty uneasy.

Nah, no lawsuits here. I'm just glad that Tim's office was only about 1 1/2 to 2 miles from my doc's office. And.....that I had the wits enough about me to drive to the office. The nurse said that she was really surprised that I drove myself, but what was I going to do? Drive 3 miles home, THEN call them or an ambulance? lol They've told me plenty of times what a really bad reaction might be and once I started wheezing and my chest started rattling....I knew where I was headed.

Also, they called my allergy place and they just want me to drop back down to the lowest dose on that vial. (Every new vial I get, I start with a low dose and work my way up through the vial. Then the next vial is a more "powerful" or concentrated or whatever (lol) dose of my allergens and I start with a small dose and work my way up, etc....) I was very surprised that they wanted me to stay on that vial. I guess I'll just stay at the office next time. I'm also going to ask if they can give me a script for an Epi. pen. That way if I'm out and get a reaction, I can give myself the injection and go to the doc's office/hospital.

I told my future mother-in-law that I almost died yesterday when her son was bugging her on the phone. I said to tell him to wait because I was telling her of how I almost died and he didn't almost die! Pbbbbbbbt.

I get my vials from the Allergy and Asthma Care Center in Winchester and they mail it to my local doctor's office so I don't have to go to Winchester every week. (In around September or October, I'll get my shots once a month. Thank GOD! Then I have to have them for around three or four more years.)

Where they RN's or "Nurses Aides" ? If they werent RN's then they were real nurses.
Ya know, I didn't look, but I believe they were real nurses. I used to be a CNA, so I know what they all are. My fiance's mother is also an RN. I don't blame my doc's office at all. I've been getting shots there for over a year. They handled it very professionally. They brought the head nurse in and three nurses monitored me. It was just really scary to try to breathe and not be able to get a decent breath. (Even after one shot of Epinephrin.) I called my fiance and told him to come over because I wanted him there and I wanted him to drive me home. When he got there, I'd had my second Epi. shot and my Benedryl shot, so he didn't see me that bad.

I'm sorry to hear that, sweetie. :( Is the neti pot still helping?

Charity had an extreme reaction to an antibiotic back in February. She had to have a shot of epinephrine and a long round of prednisone. FREAKED us out completely! Now I am scared to death to give her anything. She has to have a booster for 7th grade and I don't even want her to have that. Allergies are scary as hell.

They were trying to decide whether to give me steroids or not, but I really didn't want them. They told me to take Benedryl for a few days. I've slept basically all day. I'm taking some new medicine prescribed from the pain clinic that makes me sleepy as well. (Neurontin and Flexeril along with my Vicodin. Although, the combination is making it to where I don't have to take as much Vicodin any more. I was taking around two or three a day. Now, I take half a pill once or twice a day. WOOHOO)

I haven't used the neti in a while because it started burning like hell. I got a similar type thing from my ENT that did my sinus surgery/tonsillectomy in March and that helped. (You use 1/4 tsp. baking soda and 1/4 tsp. salt.) I haven't used it in a while, though and I think I'm getting a sinus infection. :( *Sigh*) I have a question to ask you, so I'm gonna PM ya. :)

How did this happen? I had allergy shots, twice a week for 1-2 years. I know people that have the same.

1. Why did you have to ice it? Do the needles still scare you?
2. How did you get such an adverse reaction to the very shots that are supposed to help get your body used to the allergens?

1. Ice minimizes the swelling of the injection site. I'm very sensitive to things. (Might be part of fibromyalgia, I don't know.) Every time I get an injection, I get a huge welt. I take Benedryl after every shot and I also rub on topical Benedryl. The allergy shot needles don't scare me because they're so small. Now the ones that they use at the pain clinic.....scare the HELL outta me.

2. I don't know. One nurse asked if I'm allergic to mold. I told her that mold is one of my allergins is mold. She thought that maybe because it's so humid outside and mold is more prevalent plus them giving me the injection that contained mold was a little more than my body could handle. *Shrug* I really have no clue.

I took the shots for 11 years without a problem, but a friend got one once and had a lesser reaction than what you did, then had a huge one the next time, and they had to pump him up with all kinds of stuff to let him breathe again. He quit taking the shots after that, and I did a short time later. My allergies were pretty much gone, (except for evergreens/pines, and grass)for 20 years after that, and then suddenly at age 40, they came back to life and I'm on Claritin now. Benedryl works better, but I take one and I'm gone for 14-16 hours, I can't stay awake.

I don't know how my cousin raised two kids on bendryl and never got into a wreck driving. People would call her "lazy" and it really pissed me off. I was pretty impressed that she functioned as well as she did. When she got off the Benadryl, she drove her much older hubby nuts because she suddenly had more energy than she had when she was 17, when they got married. He was....40 and her dad's best friend!

Anyone can have an allergic reaction to injecting something in your body, at any time, regardless if it's an 'allergy' immunization injection or not. I got them for many years when I was younger, and they always make you wait around for awhile (10 mins?) afterwards to check for this. So I guess you just proved they don't make you wait long enough. How long did you wait?

One thing with me is that I've had so many surgeries and medical problems that it takes a lot of anything (normally) to make me drowsy.

I'm sort of anxious thinking about getting another shot next week.

Slickone - I normally wait 15 - 20 minutes. I want to wait a little longer next time.

Many allergies are the result of the body being deficient in some particular nutrients. Find out what those are and start eating them and some/all of your allergies may go away. Unprocessed sea salt is a good start.

Wish you the best, Heather! :)

Well, I'm taking vitamins on a daily basis and taking an extra iron. My doc had me get some blood drawn the day of the allergy attack (I had the draw before the shot.) and one of the tests was B-12 or something like that. We'll see if it comes back normal or not.

I'm going to try and remember to ask for a prescription for the pen. I don't want to be out and have that happen!

Better stock up on them, supplements will require a prescription in the U.S. soon.

Yes, you will need a script for Vitamin C.

Thanks CAFTA for that.
