He deserves it. Going to make that first game in the ACC tourny much tougher.

I can't excuse what he did. He deserved to be suspended.

However, "Jules" is the dirtiest player in the ACC and deserved exactly what he got.

The situation in the game never would've occured if the refs would keep CP from being roughed up in every game he played in. Tell me nothing should've happened to Elton Brown when he popped CP3 in the head.

On the positive side, at least last night wasn't the last night Hodge gets to play in the RBC Centura Center. :D :D :D

And note, it was our school who suspended him. The league didn't have to force it. That doesn't happen at too many schools.

And here's to the classiest fans in the ACC.

ESPN Link

Paul hit the winning shot to beat the Wolfpack. Wake Forest officials said Paul was doused with soda among other things after he made the shot. Sources at Wake Forest said Paul was upset during the game when fans were taunting him about his grandfather, who passed away prior to his arrival at Wake Forest.

And to think some people thought the murder at the football game last year was a fluke.

Damn straight. Chris Paul is one of the dirtiest players in the ACC. All he does is start sh1t with people. It happens both times against Duke, one with Ewing one with Dockery

This coming from the team who had the gameplan of putting in bench warmers to rough up Chris?

Dockery is the kind of player who throws punches at students instead of players, like last year at Wake.

Sure they didn't...

""This is not an easy decision to make because of the type of individual we are dealing with. After consulting with [ACC Commissioner] John Swofford, we believe it is the right thing to do for Chris Paul, Wake Forest and the ACC."

I believe Chris Paul's comments after the game said something to the effect that it was a heated battle and things happen. He's a non-remourseful whiny SOB that got told to apologize by his coach. I am by no means a Hodge fan, but getting punched in the nuts during a bball game deserves at least a foul called.

Swofford called up WF and told them they had better do something.

The nut punch was not even called a foul, then they call a T on Hodge for a hard foul later on. Not to mention Atsur getting mauled on a 3 pointer attempt that was a no call. The ACC officials gave the game to WF and it was just far too obvious that the Commissioner had to step in.

Anyone get a cap of the incident?

Yes, but when Wake saw something happen, they made the suspension themselves.

When State saw something happen, they made the league do it.

He's remorseful because he's not a bad guy, this was retaliation. He gets beat up every game. He retaliates and it gets caught on camera.

As Sean May says in this article,

"There's a fine line," said May. "But what people don't understand is that play just got caught. It happens all the time. There were four or five plays last night (in the Tar Heels' game against Duke) where it could have been questionable as to dirty play.

"There were four or five plays when we played State when you could have questioned Julius for being dirty. It just depends."

You should realize that this kind of action, while not appropriate or condonable, happens all the time in competitive sports.

You may think Paul is whiny, but you know that you would take him on your team in a second, despite any claims to the contrary.

And here's to the classiest fans in the conference (maybe nation). From today's Raleigh News and Observer. Link

Tasteless taunt was low, too

By BARRY SAUNDERS, Staff Writer

'I killed your grandfather. I killed your grandfather." Say what? Are you out of your freakin' minds?

Yeah, I'm talking to you, the N.C. State University Wolfpack basketball fans who taunted a Wake Forest player with that chant during Sunday's game.

Chris Paul, a Wake Forest guard, was the object of the fans' wrath even before he low-blowed the Pack's Julius Hodge, a move that has resulted in a one-game suspension.

No doubt about it: It was a cheap shot, and Paul should have gotten the old heave-ho from the refs. He didn't, however, deserve to be so callously reminded that his grandfather was beaten to death during a robbery in 2002.

Answer me this, dawg: To whom was it so important for the Wolfpack to win that you'd try to rattle a kid that way?

I reckon it just shows the power of the crowd, because individually, none of the jock sniffers making the chant would have had the nerve. Instead, they'd have been asking Paul for his autograph.

Not all of the Pack's fans engaged in the tasteless chant, but those who didn't should have expressed disapproval of the clowns who did. Me, I'd have pimp-slapped somebody.

Dean Buchan, Wake Forest's sports information director, assured me that Paul heard the taunts from the fans and was affected by them.

"Taunting the opposing team is a part of the atmosphere of college sports," Buchan told me, "but we've never heard anything chanted quite that severe."

Lest Hodge think the insults hurled at his assailant are a sign of the home fans' affection for him, someone had better remind him of the things those same fans shout at him after he goes 4-17 from the floor or misses a key free throw.

"But dude," you say, "you don't understand how important ACC basketball is around these here parts."

Bull hockey. Nobody knows better than I how reverentially we regard ACC basketball. Who is the man who nursed a career-long grudge against Kareem Abdul-Jabbar because UCLA beat the Tar Heels in 1968's championship game?

Shaft? No, me.

And who is the man who requested, on every team he ever played, uniform No. 43 in honor of his favorite former Tar Heel center, Rusty Clark? That would be me, too. (I had too much reverence to ask for 33 or 44, worn by Charlie Scott and Larry Miller, respectively.)

Dwayne Ballen, a buddy of mine who has been a part of CBS' NCAA coverage for the past five seasons, said he doesn't think fan civility has lessened, but he thinks the rowdiest fans have become even rowdier.

"Everybody wants to be on 'SportsCenter,' even the fans," Ballen said. "ESPN has a segment where it rates the fans' fervor on game day. What do you think that's going to do? It encourages their fervor."

Fervent fans are one thing; foolish, unkind fans are another.

When I asked Buchan if anyone from NCSU had apologized for the fans' boorishness, he said, "No. I know Chris is going to offer his apologies for his part in this."

Classy move. Somebody at NCSU -- like, say, the chancellor -- should show similar class by calling Wake Forest and apologizing to that kid whose grandfather was murdered.

Want to tell Barry what you think? call him at 836-2811 or send e-mail to him at barrys@newsobserver.com.

And you wonder why things get heated...

Classless NC State fans followed by a classless punch. Players shouldn't stoop down to fans' level.

Some of the fans were moronic, but when is this new to the ACC? Lest we forget the projectiles that Maryland students threw at the Duke players parents? How bout the asshats in Detroit that threw beer, chairs and punches?

Some fans today are unapologetic assholes. I apologize to Chris Paul on behalf of the few morons in the stand, but still that does not give him the rights to nut punch someone.

State fans are very fickle this year, because for starters they have lost nearly every close game that they have been in and a huge part of this was terrible officiating.

The officials did not want WF and UNC to lose on Saturday because that would jeopardize a #1 seat in the big dance. I mean when have you ever heard of UNC having a defense, especially one that can shut down a team like Duke for a whole 3 minutes at the end of a game? I mean UNC committed just 1 foul in the last 3 minutes??? Bullsh!t

The obvious foul by Chris Paul no less on Atsur shooting a 3, which would have put the Pack up by 2-3 considering he is a 73% free throw shooter. Add the technical foul that should have been called on Paul since a ref was watching him do it. There is no way State should have lost that game without the help from the officiating crew.

Also consider Larry Rose personal vendetta against the Wolfpack in the game before WF, vs Virginia? He had 3 Wolfpack players whistled for 4 fouls with 10 remaining, largely simple handchecking, meanwhile in the WF Duke game you pretty much had to draw blood to get a foul.

Revenge match in the tourney? :D

Whatever you do, don't knock Wake out because I want them to beat Dook.

WF against NC State without Chris Paul and a pissed off team??? No contest. FSU has a better chance beating State.

I don't blame the officiating (particularly in this past game), I blame the fvckin' State players for missing all of their damn free throws:|:|:| There is simply no excuse. We would have won the game by 10+ points if they had hit them. That was simply recockulous

So, is it okay to throw punches that land above the belt then? I just want to be clear on the rules here.

Yeah come on. There were plenty of bad calls. Asture pulls Williams down and Williams gets called for his 5th?

The reason NCSU lost was 8-22.

Don't discount Wake on Friday. Our backup point guard would start for 90% of the teams in the nation and shouldn't have trouble with FSU.

And as for the officials letting Wake win, the foul totals were 26 to 17, Wake. State went to the line 22 times, Wake went 14.

Yes, but even with that crappy free throw shooting, they still would have won the game had it been called right.

The foul totals in the first game was 29 to 18, 2 players from State fouled out and 3 more with 4 fouls. WF had 14 steals vs only 18 fouls. WF had 42 free throw attempts vs 12 for State. WF made 23 more than State even attempted.

Either way, with a non-shitty night at the charity stripe or decent officiating State would have won. Had they had both it would not have been a contest.

Yeah, it is BS that Paul got away with it and more... State should have won. The refs always favor the big names, just how it is...

The fans chanting the grandfather thing was on par with the classless UMD fans and Duke fans, you're right. It was probably only a few (it always is), but it's pretty sad how low fans will stoop to try and get a reaction from a player. If I was next to one of them, I'd tell them to stfu and show some class.

Just another reason why the Big East is a better conference. They can handle the physical punishment of the game. And they don't whine about it.
