Now this would be VERY surprising.....Palm Beach a VERY Democratic county has double punches for DOLE, in an election where Clinton carried Florida.

I think that I have still seen NO explanation for the clearly innacurate sampling taken in the 1% &quot;test&quot; in Palm Beach County. Obviously, the entire manual recount in PBC is illegal and should not even be happening.

Russ - actually, Florida Law allows the protesting party (the Democrats) to select where the test count takes place. They picked the heaviest Democrat areas they could. The only question was the decision to make a manual recount by the canvassing board. Bush's lead was only 300 at the time, so there is an argument that the recount could change the election results.

You are right....the votes come from THOUSANDS of questionable ballots.....ones the machines couldn't read, etc.

Wow, this is interesting Michael.....I hadn't realized that the asking party got to request.....I also heard they picked from areas that had a lot of questionable ballots, which of course would tend to add for Gore. But, if this is the case, stretching this &quot;sample&quot; from 19 net for Gore, to 1900 was incorrect statisically.

You are correct. But, the law also makes it very clear that there MUST be a bonified reason to conduct a manual recount, such as a demonstrable error in the machine count. Since the sampling produced a net of 19 new votes for Albert Jr., and a MUCH larger sample has not produced anywhere near the same result, it is clear that there WAS NO machine malfunction.

Thus, the decision of the canvassing board has no validity and is therefore illegal under the law.

Russ - the Florida Supreme Court rejected that argument. The statute says &quot;tabulation&quot;, not &quot;tabulation system&quot;. It may be a loophole, but I can't find fault with the logic the Florida Supreme Court used.

A little food for thought -- Yesterday, the 80+ year old inventor of the 40+ year old voting machine testified in Florida that his invention was never intended to replace human vote counts. It was intended to back them up. He also testified that there are numerous ways that chads could be prevented from detaching and that the most problematic ballots would be double column (i.e. butterfly) ballots.

He just might know something.

Second, he's the inventor of the machine, and his opinion should count for something. Or do only Republican opinions count?

He doesn't have to have a political affiliation, and I don't even know that your assertion is true. I do know that he's got to be one of the most authoritative individuals on the planet to comment about the mechanical strengths and shortcomings of the machine he invented, regardless of his politics.

Since the PBC vote total isn't updated and since Broward County now has another 500 votes to count and needs until tomorrow to finish now (maybe they want to know how many more votes to find?), I think that Gore will pass Bush in the recount.

Harvey - The inventor of the voting machine certainly has a voice to be heard, but he just presented hypothetical situations where a dimple could be created. He didn't build or maintain the machines used nor was he involved in the preparation of the paper ballots.

They just showed up and they are from citizens living in Israel?
