So herre's the story, a couple of weeks ago I applied for a job within my company thats about 5 minutes away from my home. (my current job is an hour way in one direction) Ideally this job is a perfect match because of the fact that I have done the work before for many years, I know many of the people already in the group and of course its only 5 minutes away. However the hiring supervisor apparently did'nt think so or maybe did'nt look at my resume closely because he sent me an email saying I did'nt have the experience needed. I found that really strange considering that 85% of my work experience revolved around that kind of work (desktop support, networking, etc.) . Anyway I was really let down but I decided to give it one more try, I sent the supervisor an email with a little more detail about my experience and also how I worked with many, many members from his group. I then contacted at least 5 people from his group and asked them for any help or recommendation that they would feel comfortable giving. Well this morning I got an email from the director of the group who wants me to come in for an interview, so right now I'm moshing around the house and screaming like a kid. I think have a really good chance now.

Cliff Notes

Applied for job close to my house

Hiring supervisor says I don't have enough experience

I scratch my head in disbelief and send out emails and voicemails to ask for recommendations

This morning I get an interview directly with director of the group

Me very happy

Yeah you're right, I'll keep the 5 minute commute info to myself. I plan on working my ass off if I get this job, I like the work. It will be fun to get back to support work again.

Congrats on taking a step towards getting your dream job...but your dream job is working desktop support for SBC?

I wish my dreams were that realistic...I'd probably be a much happier person.

Well once I gave up on my dream to be Bill Gate's replacement and moonlighting as a porn star with the female cast of Baywatch I went after what was attainable

I've only been with the company about 3 years but from what the veterans tell me some of their benefits are being cut back, but then again I guess almost all companies are scaling back one way or another

Awesome... good to hear that persistence is still sometimes looked upon favourably. Hope it all works out from you, as I also enjoy the 5-minutes from work experience..

You know, he may already have someone else in mind for that job, but is now forced to interview you because of the "internal pressure".

At least in my department, we're suppose to hire from within, but usually we like to hire "experienced" contractors who are already here instead of green associates from 2nd level desktop support.

My manager would post the job on the intranet for 1 week and reject all applicants before hiring the contractor that we have already in the room.
