Agreed, there's no need to show something that most people have seen/knew already. If you're not sure if the cool thing you wanna post has been already posted before, use the SEARCH function.

I just feign interest and act like I was surprised. I usually see stuff on the internet from a month to a year before someone tries showing it to me in real life. This happened a lot with those POP OUT AND SCARE THE CRAP OUT OF YOU things. I'd seen them all, and 4 months later my coworkers are showing them to everyone. I'd just go along with it, watch it "WITH THE VOLUME ON SO YOU CAN OBSERVE BETTER!!!!!111" and then just not have any reaction whatsoever when the scary part comes. :)

It's the same reason that people say that they were into a particular music group or clothing style before it became popular. They just want to demonstrate that they knew about this thing before it was going around the teenybopper IM crowd. It's a way of saying that they see stuff like that on their own and don't need pop culture to bring it to them. I'm not defending it, just explaining it.

I usually answer with that because I don't see anything wrong with being honest. Now, how you phrase it determines whether or not it makes you feel superior.

1 - "Yeah, I saw that recently. It's {funny|amazing|scary}."
2 - "Yeah, I already saw that."
3 - "Of course I saw that."
4 - "Dude, where have you been? Under a rock?"

Plus, as others have said, the impact is reduced the 2nd or 3rd time.
