Are you going to be working with MS State?

No, it's a government contractor. I'll be at Stennis Space Center.

My boss didn't seem shocked when I told him. I think he knew.
Ah cool, worked with both (MS State & Stennis) when I was with the USDA. I actually did a lot of work in ArcGIS tracking experiments we did on the grounds around Stennis.

What sort of GIS work do you do? I'm very interested in parlaying my IT skills into some GIS programming work even though I don't have a lot of GIS experience. Good luck with the move!

Welcome back!

On your way down, just stop by Tupelo. I'll be on my back porch in overalls and will be sweating heavily. 😉

Did you consider using PODS and just driving your car down?

Those things are gawd awful expensive. I have looked into that option 3 times and i always have to pick my jaw up off the ground when i get the quote.

How big is the mansion you're going to be moving in to?

944 ft².

Rent is expensive outside of a NASA facility and along the casino lined, palm-treed gulf coast.

My company does a lot of stuff with the Corps of Engineers. They do a lot of mapping of rivers and whatnot. They use ArcGIS with a little Microstation here and there.

Penske:

Truck 16' Truck $2,169.00
Includes Free, Unlimited Mileage
Towing Car Carrier $345.00
2004 Mazda Mazda6 I
Accessories Furniture Pads(4 dz) $60.00

Subtotal $2,574.00
Web Discount $(216.90)

New Subtotal $2,357.10
Estimated Rental Taxes $188.97
Environmental Fee $5.00

Approximate Total Charge $2,551.07

Slap AAA on there for a 12% discount and it's around $2250. The gas, lodging, extra meals, and wear and tear aren't worth the $500-$700 you'd save making the trip multiple times. That's a 16' truck though. How big do you need?

Ah! Glad to see you took my advice and got the hell out of this godforsaken area (Kingston/Poughkeepsie). I'd love to leave IT too, but I'd settle for getting out of the area first, then working on a job change. Luckily you kill 2 birds with one stone... 😀

Congrats!

PS. You're right, it's rained like every freakin day lately.

Not too big. I have a computer desk, table and chairs, dresser, queen sized bed, book case, and plasma TV. It's basically one bedroom plus a living room, minus a couch.

I won't need lodging, I can make the trip in one day without stopping. I may do the flying thing, though. That was my original plan, but I thought I'd be leaving during Thanksgiving.

This is the layout of the apartment I'm probably going to be renting. I've never seen one without a hallway entrance to the bathroom. You have to go into one of the bedrooms to use it...

I too am leaving the IT field. Tonight I'm taking just the clothes on my back, a few thousand dollars, and getting on a one way flight to the US Virgin Islands. Once there I plan to change my name and start selling necklaces made out of shells I find along the beach.

Though 99% might think I'm crazy, I'm moving away from the Hudson Valley in NY to return to my old company (new job, higher pay) in Mississippi. The move is going to suck in ways that I had never dreamed of, since I'm going to have to rent a truck, drive down there, drive back to NY, and drive my car down to MS again (It's the cheapest way).

I moved up here after Hurricane Katrina, and I work in the IT field right now. I freaking hate it. I'd rather do just about anything than IT stuff.

So I return to the GIS industry and prepare for 72 hours of driving in four days. I called my boss to give my notice, but he's not in today, apparently. It's very exciting.

That is all.

Congrats

I like the pay but not the work as much anymore, it's got its days.

I would prefer to work now as a chef, carpenter, or pilot - none of which is realistically feasible.

I'm very jealous. I'm on a 5-8 year plan to move from IT right now. Congrats!!!!

Thanks, everyone.

The thing that I really like about GIS is that you work in a highly-collaborative environment and you get to take raw data and turn it into a finished product. I'll still have to do some IT things like scripting and whatnot, but in the end I just couldn't accept a life of working on boring systems, dealing with bad programmers and managment who didn't understand the magical purple Sun boxes in the big air conditioned room.

It's got no soul, man.

I left IT for good. Funny thing is, they keep trying to recruit me! Even though they tempt me with more money (which I could surely use) I have to keep reminding myself how much I used to hate doing IT work! It's fun as a hobby.... even frustrating then, sometimes!

Congrats! I hope you'll be much happier! 🙂

How much of that stuff could you just replace when you get down there? $1000(truck + gas) could go pretty far in re-buying a lot of stuff. Clothes and other things can get boxed up and shipped UPS ground for cheap.

If your current stuff is pretty inexpensive, I'd just drop it at the door of Goodwill and re-buy. Or see if you can just sell it before leaving for $$.

Matresses, desks, and dressers can all be had pretty cheap. Again, on the assumption that it was cheap to begin with.

Just another thought from a guy who's moved to 4 different states in a similar number of years 🙂

Well, the TV was $2199 and it won't fit in my car... That pretty much kills it right there. I did, however, pay $250 for all of the other furniture, because my roommate's sister needed to move the stuff out of storage.

I might as well spend as much of the $2000 moving expense as I can. Even if it's a pain for a few days, that's not much compared to years of living. I've moved 24 times and I'm only 24 years old. This 25th time is going to be it for quite a while.

Thanks, Dave. Do you still live on the Northshore?

No, debi and left the New Orleans area 5 months after Katrina.

Took a bath selling the house.

Moved to Oklahoma but have been living in Colorado (that's where my job went).
