Ah cool, worked with both (MS State & Stennis) when I was with the USDA. I actually did a lot of work in ArcGIS tracking experiments we did on the grounds around Stennis.
What sort of GIS work do you do? I'm very interested in parlaying my IT skills into some GIS programming work even though I don't have a lot of GIS experience. Good luck with the move!

Those things are gawd awful expensive. I have looked into that option 3 times and i always have to pick my jaw up off the ground when i get the quote.

Not too big. I have a computer desk, table and chairs, dresser, queen sized bed, book case, and plasma TV. It's basically one bedroom plus a living room, minus a couch.
I won't need lodging, I can make the trip in one day without stopping. I may do the flying thing, though. That was my original plan, but I thought I'd be leaving during Thanksgiving.
This is the layout of the apartment I'm probably going to be renting. I've never seen one without a hallway entrance to the bathroom. You have to go into one of the bedrooms to use it...

I too am leaving the IT field. Tonight I'm taking just the clothes on my back, a few thousand dollars, and getting on a one way flight to the US Virgin Islands. Once there I plan to change my name and start selling necklaces made out of shells I find along the beach.
I like the pay but not the work as much anymore, it's got its days.
I would prefer to work now as a chef, carpenter, or pilot - none of which is realistically feasible.

The thing that I really like about GIS is that you work in a highly-collaborative environment and you get to take raw data and turn it into a finished product. I'll still have to do some IT things like scripting and whatnot, but in the end I just couldn't accept a life of working on boring systems, dealing with bad programmers and managment who didn't understand the magical purple Sun boxes in the big air conditioned room.
It's got no soul, man.
I left IT for good. Funny thing is, they keep trying to recruit me! Even though they tempt me with more money (which I could surely use) I have to keep reminding myself how much I used to hate doing IT work! It's fun as a hobby.... even frustrating then, sometimes!

How much of that stuff could you just replace when you get down there? $1000(truck + gas) could go pretty far in re-buying a lot of stuff. Clothes and other things can get boxed up and shipped UPS ground for cheap.
If your current stuff is pretty inexpensive, I'd just drop it at the door of Goodwill and re-buy. Or see if you can just sell it before leaving for $$.
Matresses, desks, and dressers can all be had pretty cheap. Again, on the assumption that it was cheap to begin with.

Well, the TV was $2199 and it won't fit in my car... That pretty much kills it right there. I did, however, pay $250 for all of the other furniture, because my roommate's sister needed to move the stuff out of storage.
I might as well spend as much of the $2000 moving expense as I can. Even if it's a pain for a few days, that's not much compared to years of living. I've moved 24 times and I'm only 24 years old. This 25th time is going to be it for quite a while.
