Though 99% might think I'm crazy, I'm moving away from the Hudson Valley in NY to return to my old company (new job, higher pay) in Mississippi. The move is going to suck in ways that I had never dreamed of, since I'm going to have to rent a truck, drive down there, drive back to NY, and drive my car down to MS again (It's the cheapest way).

I moved up here after Hurricane Katrina, and I work in the IT field right now. I freaking hate it. I'd rather do just about anything than IT stuff.

So I return to the GIS industry and prepare for 72 hours of driving in four days. I called my boss to give my notice, but he's not in today, apparently. It's very exciting.

That is all.

GIS industry?

What exactly are you going to be doing?

Wouldn't it be cheaper (or at least not much more) to just rend a car tow dolly and tow your car with the truck.

Yep.

There's not a whole lot of difference, to be honest. Replace the cajuns with Italians and it's pretty much the same. I know that MS has a reputation of being back-water, but the area of NY that I'm in is no different.

Actually, no.

To rent a tow dolly and truck one way is $3500 plus gas. To rent the truck and drive it down and back up is $500 plus gas. I've checked with two different companies and the prices are almost identical.

I guess your right.
You live up by the Catskills right? (Kingston, from your profile)

I hate upstate NY, it's just too...quiet.
(I live on Long Island)

Yep, I live right at the base of the Catskill mountains. It's very beautiful, but the cost of living is now higher than the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and it rains every freaking day up here. It hasn't been sunny in God knows how long.

Well, Mississippi isn't without its drawbacks. As far as areas go, Kingston is very pretty. Mississippi is flat and wooded. The overwhelming reason for me leaving is that I dislike my job and my company. The extra money doesn't hurt, either.

WTF? Cost me $150 extra for the full size car lift (all four wheels off the ground) when I moved from south FL to northern GA in April.

They're trying to charge you $3,000 for a tow dolly!?!?! Thats just retarded on their part.

No, they charge extra for one-way moves.

Didn't he say he was going to drive back up anyway to go get his car?

Did you consider using PODS and just driving your car down?

Good for you man. I'll be back in New Orleans in 18 months if everything goes as planned.

I got lost in Kingston (well, as lost as you can get there ;)) last month trying to get to Panther Mountain to go camping.

Are you going to be working with MS State?

Only because I can't afford to one-way it. If I could, I would tow my car. As it is now, I'm going to drive the truck down, unload it, sleep, drive it back up here, sleep, and drive my car down.

I'll have to make this trip three times, basically.

No, it's a government contractor. I'll be at Stennis Space Center.

My boss didn't seem shocked when I told him. I think he knew.

I have a 3-5 year exit strategy from IT. I've been in for about 8.5 years.
It's not ever what I wanted to do, but it's been good to my family.

I daydream about being out of IT a lot. :)

Cheers, congrats, good luck. Pull over if you get tired!!!!
