NIS also says it "will continue to support Windows XP for the foreseeable future". Are Avast or Malwarebytes any better than NIS?

They are kind of different animals.. Malwarebytes is mainly for malware/spyware/unwanted software instead of regular viruses/worms/trojans. It finds stuff that AV programs can miss.

thanks that bit of information because i thought Malwarebytes was an AV.

Go to their website gives you info on Malwarebytes,my recommendation as a good backup to whatever AV you use.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free's industry-leading scanner detects and removes malware like worms, Trojans, rootkits, rogues, spyware, and more. All you have to do is launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free and run a scan. It's that simple. Or if you want even better protection, consider Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium and its instant real-time scanner that automatically prevents malware and websites from infecting your PC. Either way you're crushing malware and foiling hackers

Switched from XP to Linux a year or two back when I built a new machine. Well actually, i switched to 7 but I had been wanting to switch to Linux so figured since I'm learning a whole new OS may as well just jump straight to Linux. I still have 7 as a dual boot OS though for when I want to game.

At work it's another story though, XP all the way. Though, we've been talking about trying to convince IT to give us a test machine so we can try 7 on it and see if we can get our apps to work on it. Lot of apps throughout the company wont work outside of XP but it would be nice if we could get our stuff to work or worse case scenario use those apps in a VM. 7 would mean we could put more ram in our machines. Would be nice to have like 6-8 gigs.

That's our problem at work. I have the machines maxed out at 4gb(~3.5gb available), and they sometimes run out of memory. Of course no one tells me when it happens. They just reboot the machine, and I just guess what the issue was based on their crappy insight. The main CAD guy uses AOL, and it could very well be their crappy software causing the issue. Or anything else. Who knows? I told him to open taskmanager if I wasn't there, but I don't know if he knows how, or would know what he's looking at if he did.

bought and installed Malwarebytes Premium but NIS wont let its live monitoring run... Will it be a good idea to disable NIS and let Malwarebytes Premium take over?

Personally I'd just remove NIS and use a different AV program.

Retired all of the XP machines throughout the building. The phaseout began Jan 2012 and the last machine was retired this last fall. Haven't used XP at my house in 4 1/2 years.

It was a great operating system but it is well past it's prime. It will always have a place in my heart for nostalgic reasons though.

It doesn't properly support them. The scheduler differences. The biggest problem is that its a security mess and has zero support for modern features - think UEFI and GPT. It was built back in 2001, it just isn't designed for anything modern.

Actually, most of XP was built in 1999, when the NT 5 kernel was introduced in Windows 2000. In computer terms, XP is Mesozoic. I retired my last XP system a few years ago, and dual boot Windows 7 and Mint 16 these days.

i retired my windows xp pro in 2009 when i installed windows 7 but after a few months I didn't like windows 7 so went back to windows xp pro and ubuntu.

AV software is supposed to coexist with Malwarebytes so you should contact norton to see why it's not working.

Your troll does not answer my question, but thanks anyways for opening my eyes, I didn't know NIS was the worst IS software...

I am in the middle of updating my companies PCs to win 7 pro. Win 8 pro is just horrid and costs twice as much.

That's surprising given that the retail price of 7 is more than 8. Two your second point, I hear that 8.1 is better, but I have not tried it personally.
