If you still haven't sent the email, I would call him and apologize. IMHO, this sounds like a big deal and a verbal apology would be way better than one over email.

The tapes are a secondary backup measure so it isn't as big a deal as it seems.

Anyhow I have heeded all of your valuable advice and it is appreciated. I just re-read the thread and realized how much of an idiot I am and how stupid I sound.

You have no choice but to admit that you messed up and apologize for spacing out. You have no way out of what has been done. Tell him you messed and promise not to do it again..and make sure You don't do it again
 
Late to thread, but my 2 cents....

You don't deserve your job OP (as crappy and lame as it is).

You deserve to be at least cut back on hours if not fired.

If I were his boss I would not fire him just for forgetting to change the tapes. I would fire him for making some B.S. lie though and not taking responsibility for his absent-mindedness.
