I don't think lying to him would change that. Actually it would probably make it worse, because the boss would probably check on him and realize he was lying. There's no lie he could make up to get out of it, because even if something prevented him from changing the tapes he should have e-mailed his boss at the time.

no lying would be far far worse.

what i have trouble with is he did not take responsibility. he blamed it on something else. While i wouldn't fire him (unless he has done other crap) but anything else he would be gone.

Yeah, this is definitely the best advice.

What is the MAIN part of your job? If its changing tapes how could you forget the entire reason you are there for.

Make a checklist, and not something on the computer. A peice of paper that you carry with you, leave in your locker, or at your desk.

What happens if a nurse forgot to take care of her patient? What happens if a doctor forgets to take care of his pt? What happens if a lawyer forgets to take care of his pt? They get fired!!!

See now if you would've told him you simply forgot and you won't forget again, you could've been off the hook even with a heavy slap in the wrist. But now that you've blamed Outlook's reminder expiring as your reason for not changing the tapes you've really made the situation worse.

If I were your boss I'd rather have you admit and learn from your mistakes and scold you for it rather than having you blame something else for it. That would be automatic grounds for dismissal by my books.

I hope that tapes are not your only backup system and if it is, I really hope that Mr. CEO is informed about the miss and doesn't request a file he modified on one of those dates to be restored.

you can;t compare a lawyer and a doctor etc to a tape jockey. odds are he is a computer op (lowest of the low).

most have little to no education or experiance and is making pretty low pay (compared to others in IT)

Wow dude, forgetting 3 nights in a row to change 30 some tapes? Sounds to me like you were totally slacking on the job and probably didn't do a whole lot else while you got paid either.

you didn't tell the truth, you still lied. how do you feel better about lying? truth > *. i'm willing to bet your boss would have let it slide had you just fessed up, but now, you've probably earned yourself a "YOU'RE FIRED!"

as a future lesson, telling the truth is always the best route.

Wow alot happened in the last 30 minutes.. Well, I hadn't hit send on the email yet, and after reading all the responses, this is what i sent -

xxxx -

I'm not sure what happened last week with the tapes, but I totally dropped the ball. For some reason beyond explanation, I just failed to change them. I have since created an Outlook reminder for this so it shouldn't happen again.

Thanks,

xxxxxx

Quick rundown. I work 3 nights a week, and part of my job is to change the nightly backup tapes on ~30 servers. I work Wed, Thurs and Fri night...

Anyway, last week I forgot to change the tapes entirely on all three nights, so Tuesday's tapes were still sitting in the server's this morning when my boss took a walk through.

He wants an explanation as to why Tuesday's tapes are in the server and not Friday's (or none at all) and is wondering if the backups have not been completed since last Tuesday!

EDIT: I just emailed my boss telling him that I forgot to change them last week due to my Outlook reminder expiring. So I told the truth, but gave him an excuse why. I feel better.

quoted for posterity

and what waggy said, which is it?

this thread has become a perfect example of why lying is NOT the solution. as people said, you just dig yourself a bigger hole, which is what waggy just pointed out

Your only option here is to kill him and then wear his face like a mask. Then live his life as he would as if nothing happened. Noone will know the difference! And you'll get off scott free! Even a promotion to manager, no more changing tapes for you!

dude, if you can't even resolve something as small as this, you have more to worry about. Life is full of mistakes, you just have to know how to handle it.

Agreed... In reality I knew what the right course of action was/is. I just needed some pushing from ATOT to do the right thing...

Well in that case, I have a suggestion. Instead of saying "For some reason beyond explanation," admit that you FORGOT. You never say you forgot. You say you dropped the ball, and you say you failed to do it, but you don't say you forgot to do it, which is what happened. Say it!

And apologize.

And instead of saying it shouldn't happen again, say it won't happen again. His response to your saying it shouldn't happen again will be that it shouldn't have happened in the first place.

keep it up, you will feel better deep down now than if you had lied! Mistakes are made to be learnt from. thank your fortunes that this happened now rather than some other day when the tapes were really needed, like a robbery or afire!! :)

Now :) and get back to work
