Quick rundown. I work 3 nights a week, and part of my job is to change the nightly backup tapes on ~30 servers. I work Wed, Thurs and Fri night...

Anyway, last week I forgot to change the tapes entirely on all three nights, so Tuesday's tapes were still sitting in the server's this morning when my boss took a walk through.

He wants an explanation as to why Tuesday's tapes are in the server and not Friday's (or none at all) and is wondering if the backups have not been completed since last Tuesday!

I can't think of any possible excuse if all of the equipment is working fine. Are you really the only one changing the backup tapes? I thought most businesses changed tapes daily...

You made the mistake. Unless you have a legitimate reason for forgetting, fess up and don't do it again!

Uhhhh....

How old are you?

Even thinking of doing something other that coming completely clean leads me to believe you are ~18 and stupid.

Come clean. Lying is only going to make it worse. Your boss is not stupid.

If you have certain tasks that must be completed every night, make yourself a checklist.

The truth shall set you free. If you try to fake him out with some genius excuse, you will simply dig yourself a deeper hole.

Of course tell him the truth, but also figure a way to remind yourself to prevent it in the future and let him know about it.

Could be something as simple as an outlook message popup that say "Remember to change the tapes"

How do you forget to do something that important no less than 3 nights in a row? Doesn't sound like you have any good excuse if you showed up for work....the sick or death in the family excuses are no good here. Plus, it freaking 3 nights in a row!!!

The real reason I forgot is because of just that. I forgot. Dont know how or why I forgot all three nights, I am confused myself as to why. We weren't overly busy or anything.

Anyway, I just emailed my boss telling him that I forgot to change them last week due to my Outlook reminder expiring. So I told the truth, but gave him an excuse why. I feel better.

If this is a regular part of your duties, HOW can you blame it on somethng so lame as " my Outlook reminder expiring"? I'll be surprised if instead of " I feel better", your boss doesn't make you say "I feel fired"...

Sounds like you need to make a checklist of must-do items in Word and print a stack to work through every night you work. Date them and check items off and you'll never make this mistake again.

I've used the "my Notes calendar reminder didn't work" excuse for not filling out my weekly time sheet before :) It was the truth, too... The whole Notes reminder system is kinda flaky.

Ok, so you change 30 tapes EVERY night. Do you expect anyone to believe that you FORGOT to change 30 tapes, that you normally change EVERY NIGHT YOU WORK??

you said that you are responsible for the 3 days you work, but someone else is responsible the other FOUR days of the week. Your last night was Friday, so who dropped the ball for Sat/Sun?
