YAWorkplaceT: How do you guys feel about team lunches?

is it like the encore at a concert? You hate it, but you expect it so when you don't get it you're mad anyway?

depends on the coworkers. if they are smart, business oriented people, i love to go to lunch together as it gives me a chance to discuss work in a more informal setting. otehrwise, like most of the time, it's just chaos with people i dont like and a waste of time, plus a great opportunity to get fired.

I've had a handful and don't mind them but I get along reasonably in any group I've ever worked with. I also will occasionally just get lunch with my bosses.

Fuck that. Sounds like a "Boomer's getting overtime for lunch" situation to me...if you talk about work while I'm eating my lunch...you're gonna pay me overtime to eat.

Depends on the team. I typically don't have a lot in common with my teams because they are a bunch of nerds. I am a nerd too don't get me wrong, but I'm also into non-nerd stuff. It's just awkward not having a lot to talk about sometimes.

It also depends if they are mandatory or not.

I hate the whole team crap thing especially emails that start with "Team,". Put it right up there with "World Class".

When we do team lunches, they're technically "meetings", meaning there's no problem if they last well beyond the typical hour long lunch break. So, overall I enjoy them.

Team lunches often involved 'open and honest' conversations with someone in upper management as some kind of 'judgement free' zone - which was BS. I'd rather be force to eat twinkies and drink cheap beer so long as I could be left alone to do my work.

Never had a team lunch. Sometimes the boss works with me and we eat out. Does that count? Usually when he works with me it means lunch is late or not at all cause no one ever taught him how to tell time. Not a huge deal cause I have a lot of pocketable food, but irritating none the less.

usually they are fine, but i have seen them go horribly wrong and get people fired so it can really go either way.

Big fan of them as the food is free. And its usually better food than I buy for myself the days I don't bring a lunch

Who is paying for said lunch and what is the quality of restaurant that said lunch is at? That will completely dictate my answer.
