I'm hoping someone here will have the time to help me get a workout routine set up to get me to my goals.

Right now I'm about 6'0" and 160-165. I'm hoping to thin down a bit as I'm not too muscular, and then later start building some muscle and definition. I'm at college and have full access to a track, healthy meals, and a gym. Only problem is I have no idea what to do besides eat less and run.

Thanks a bunch for the help guys.

You're 6 feet tall, weigh 160 pounds, and you want to be thinner?? You need to find out your body fat percentage before doing anything.

If you have never weight trained seriously before, I would recommend lifting heavy while eating in a slight caloric deficit. Many beginners can lose fat and build some muscle at the same time. Note that this becomes MUCH more difficult as you gain experience.

First you need a routine. Without going into too much detail, I would recommend you see the link in my sig. Join at that board and read the stickies. Register and ask questions as necessary. Basically you want a routine centered around basic compound movements.

Second you need a good diet. If you want to make good progress, especially when trying to lose fat, you need to start tracking exactly what you eat each day. The website Fitday is invaluable for this. Start by finding an approximation to your maintenance calories here - don't forget to click on the link labeled "Daily Caloric Needs" once you type in your info.

For more info. I would seriously just go to the board in my sig, register, read all the stickies in the various forums, and ask questions as necessary. I have typed this stuff all out way too many times. If you have specific questions feel free to PM me though.

Yes and no. I want to lose some of the fat on my body and replace it with muscle. I'm not sure how to find out my body fat percentage.

You may be able to accomplish just that if you train heavy and eat in a slight caloric deficit.

Thanks, I'll try to do this.

If you're "skinny fat" now where you are small-framed but have a high bodyfat because you have little muscle, just go hit the gym. Filling up with muscle will lower your bodyfat without having to diet.

Special K- Please tell explain how someone can lose weight AND gain muscle at the same time...because...this is the first time I've ever heard of it...

Well, this is the first time I've ever heard of it coming from someone who actually seems somewhat knowledgeable.

I was speaking only of beginners who have little or no weight training experience and who start out somewhat to moderately overweight. I'm not saying someone of average build is going to suddenly drop to < 10% and pack on 20 lbs. at the same time when they first start training. My comment was based mostly on the progress pics and member testimonials over at the website in my sig.

As I said, for an experienced lifter it's pretty much impossible unless you are a genetic freak or on drugs.

I guess I should have added more qualifications to my statement, although undoubtedly if this post is still near the top come tomorrow morning there will be at least a few who will try to argue that you can in fact do it.

At your height and weight, just start eating more right off the bat. You'll be wasting time by trimming down and then bulking up. You should just start bulking up now with more (yet healthy) food in addition to starting some weight training in addition to your running. You should def ask at the forum mentioned about, and start reading t-mag everyday!
