I always tip the maximum I can afford or whatever I have in my pocket. I have worked in the pizza business before and I know how hard it is for drivers. Not to mention this price of gas.

Tipping is a stupid tradition.

Tipping is not a "tradition." It is a system for paying personal service providers that puts total power in the hands of the customer. When the provider knows that his pay is solely based on how happy he makes his customer, he is far more likely to go out of his way to make that customer happy.

An hourly employee only needs to make his boss happy. If you want restaurant service to be as bad as your average non-commission retail store, go ahead with your ignorant hate of the tipping system. Imagine going to your fav restaurant and getting the same crappy "where the fsck is anybody" service you get at Home Depot or Best Buy.

Maybe it's time to rethink your position?

If It's under $20, I'll tip $3 + whatever the difference is so I don't get change back.

Over 20, It's generally about $5+change tip. I <3 my pizza driver.

When it includes a delivery charge, I consider that part of their tip - most places here that charge goes straight to the driver. There's a chain here that adds $2.50 to each delivery, and I'll only tip above that if it got to me fast, hot and fresh.

In high school I worked at a Pizza Hut in a shithole of a town, with rednecks that are tough to get tips out of. It wasn't uncommon for the drivers to make $50-60 an hour, and that was nearly 20 years ago.

Who the fuck expects napkins and plates with their pizza?

When you take a shit in a public restroom do you want the janitor to wipe your ass, too?

Tipping is a stupid tradition.

You just need to learn how to use it better. If you are a regular customer and the people know you as a good tipper then you will get better quality service hands down. Yes, I realize you are paying for the services and they should be good quality anyways but this is reality. People do a better job when there is a good incentive. Look at it as paying a few extra bucks for the "quality package" vs the "normal package".

I would tip for services rendered regardless of who it is. I imagine it all goes into a tip pool anyway.

I don't tip unless they earn it. Doing their job is earning the paycheck, which my bill is paying for. Going above and beyond the job, doing something to make my life easier when you don't have to is going above and beyond --like bringing plates and napkins. That's my responsibility, not theirs, but if they're going to bring them, the driver gets a tip. Not the only example, obviously, but tips are earned, not automatically deserved.

One of my good friends, a guy I work with, delivers pizza in the evenings and weekends. He makes $2 for every delivery. If he takes 6 orders with him on one trip, that's $12 from his employer right there. Then whatever the customer gives him. Then his employer reimburses him for gas because he uses his personal vehicle. Also, he says pizza ingredients cost less than $4 per pie for the largest size they sell. Making 7 or 8 bucks an hour (minimum wage here) and pumping out a pizza in just a few minutes means that labor costs you next to nothing per pie, on average. Whatever. They're absurdly overpriced (mmm but oh so yummy - gourmet chicken garlic FTMFW)

He makes bank and says the job is amazingly easy -you'd have to be considerably "low-brow" to be challenged delivering pizza.

I don't buy that whole "it's hard work" bullshit.

Too bad this isn't a real-world application, though, Amused. Far too many people in the food industry (even people in this thread) seem to think that a tip is required and will give you standard service if you tip and sub-standard service if you don't tip.

It would be nice, but the world doesn't work that way anymore.

Why does everyone seem to forget that, when you go somewhere for a service, you will be paying the bill? The bill covers services rendered.

i wasn't pissed the pie was delish

Pizza delivery gets the worst tips. You will hear commonly 'you don't tip, it's just pizza' or think the delivery charge goes to the driver.

Back in 1990ish delivering chinese food we averaged $2 per order with the $.25 the restaurant gave as 'gas' per order. The worst we had was a few old people would order a million items and make you wait while they opened and tasted each one.

Pizza hut next door's drivers averaged about $0.50 total per order usually gettign just rounded up change.

Also on top of the crappy tips, often for parties they'd get called back out for more sodas or pies and the same original crappy tip was stretched across all the trips.

I usually give a minimum of $5 for someone to show up at my door with food.
