So I recently looked into carrying a taser or stun gun around campus. Couldn't find anything on my univ's various sites, so I directly emailed the campus police. Turns out both tasers and stun guns are considered "weapons" and therefore cannot be kept on or carried around campus, concealed or not. Further investigation turned up that my University is not just a gun free zone as I had previously thought, but a weapon free zone. The one exception being "pocket knives" which can be any non-automatic folding knife with a blade up to 3" in length, and "cutlery" which is any fixed knife "with a role in food preparation" up to 6" in length (although they don't permit carry for these they can be kept in the dorms).

So I can keep and carry around a 3" spring-assisted opening tanto knife which can easily be used as a lethal weapon, but can't carry the almost 100% less than lethal (and if I'm drawing it on someone I probably won't be giving a shit about whether they have a heart condition) taser or stun gun without being arrested and potentially expelled.

Stop going to school and join the army and go to war. You get to carry a gun around then.

1. Why? I'm bitching about a stupid policy. Lighten up.

2. Because I like being prepared, have been in situations (off campus) where one would have been nice to have and since firearms aren't allowed I was looking into the next best thing. Given that I live on campus but frequently go off campus, would be nice if I could keep one with me as opposed to either going without or making a trek out to my car every time I go off campus (and I'm not willing to do the latter).

Believe it or not, not all people who carry weapons do so because they're scared or insecure.

Okay. I'm a common sense type of guy.

Another ATOT social deviant who thinks OTHERS are weird for prohibiting the carrying of tazer on COLLEGE CAMPUS?

[edit]
There's no getting around to it, for 4 yrs of attending my college that is situated in a inner city, I've never felt the need to carry a weapon. There are plenty of emergency call kiosks/actual police stations liberally sprinkled in any campuses. Use them if trouble brews.

Because I like being prepared, have been in situations (off campus) where one would have been nice to have

If you are confronted by trouble/douchebags, common sense & wise attitude goes a LONG away than the equally douchbaggy 'don't fuck with me I got a tazer' mentality. The vast majority of 99% campus students probably don't carry a weapon. YOU certainly don't need them.

(As for off-campus, I'm all for the right to bear arms, just not for this stupid ass college kid scenario)

Unless you guys have metal detectors you could probably have a gun on you in class everyday and never get caught.

Universities over there must be scary places if you feel like you have to carry a gun/taser/other weapon.

I completely agree. That's why I carry my knife at all times and became a student representative for Students for conceal carry on campus. If you're interested look into the following website and take the initiative to be part of the empty holster protests or become a student rep.

Whatever helps you sleep at night

I sleep, walk around and go about my daily life just fine without one and have for the last 3 years. However it would appear that admitting that would make it hard for you to sleep at night.

Not making any judgments here, but in my experience the people who chastise others for carrying weapons are usually the ones most afraid of them.

Pretty much, but I'd rather not risk expulsion if for some stupid reason or slip-up it becomes visible, some moron sees it and thinks "AHHHH GUN VIRGINIA TECH VIRGINIA TECH VIRGINIA TECH NORMAL PEOPLE DON'T CARRY GUNS HE'S GONNA KILL US ALL AHHHHHHHHH!" Sadly enough I know a person like that.

nope... not afraid of a damn thing. i walk outside at night, not afraid of being mugged, or robbed or anything.

i'm not stupid and avoid going into the bad neighborhoods or placing myself into situations where i would need a weapon to defend myself.

for example: you wont find me walking down a dark alley at 2am in a slum.

if you feel you NEED to carry a weapon when going to school... all i can assume is one of two things:
(1) your a pussy who gets afraid of their own shadow or
(2) your school is in a shitty area where people get mugged during broad daylight with hundreds of people out on campus or in the street.

if the answer is (1) ... well... nothing we can do for you. learn to man up
if the answer is (2) ... leave and find a better school. dont put yourself in that situation.

Weapons don't make me uncomfortable, drunk college students with weapons does. More than 50% of the students at the school I went to shouldn't be allowed around anything sharper than a spork when they've had a drink.

Neither Virginia Tech nor Northern Illinois were considered to be in bad areas and if students who were legally allowed to concealed carry elsewhere (At least one student within the classrooms that were shot at) were allowed to carry at school, the death and injury toll very easily could have been less. And don't give me the BS "Those civilians could have hurt other civilians" because if you have gone through all the crap you're required to go through to get a concealed permit, you know how to shoot and shoot safely.

Laws mandate that once you have consumed any alcohol whatsoever, you forfeit your right to carry a firearm with a concealed carry permit.

I meant afraid of guns and weapons. And no I don't feel a "need" to carry a weapon. If I felt my life was threatened I'd say screw the rules and carry a firearm in direct violation of school policy and state law. I do, however, "want" to as you never know.

A weapon is a tool like any other, a tool for use in self defense. It serves its purpose in the same way the multi-tool, light, tape, and other stuff I carry around on a daily basis does when the need for it arises.

Yes avoidance goes a long way, but case in point there have been a few muggings and one rape on campus. There's also known gang activity (in one case that I actually witnessed guys were caught carrying full blown machetes across campus) around campus. That's not why I'm inquiring into this, but I have the life experience to know that even in the good, known to be safe parts of town bad stuff can happen to the best people with the best common sense in the world. I'm glad you haven't experienced that yet, and sorry if you ever do because while I was able to diffuse my situation without a weapon that was as much luck as good judgement. If my luck had gone sour I would have been screwed, with a weapon possibly not so much. It would have been the same story for you or anyone else.

Once again not carrying out of fear, as that was an isolated incident several years ago. As are the incidents on campus (albeit more recently) Just being prepared at no cost to anyone but me, and even that's only in a little $$ and a few oz of weight. If this causes you to think I'm a pussy then I'm not the one with a problem here.

And hell, in the 1/a billion chance that VT does occur, I would have a slight chance to stop it. You would at best have a chance to not get shot.

All you need is one case of one trigger happy SOB blasting some kid off because he "looked suspicious".

Ive got friends who go to USC/Berkeley/UCLA and have never had ANY problems whatsoever just as long you mind your own fucking business. If anything, pepper spray and running shoes are a better deterrent than anything.

Perhaps, but what are YOU afraid of? Do you think someone is out to get you?

Have you pissed of someone lately? Have you had an encounter with EBM?

And said trigger happy SOB would be severely punished, and if concealed carry was ubiquitous enough he would probably be shot himself. Even if he wasn't in some states he could get the death penalty.

Besides, how often does that happen? IMO banning concealed carry because of a few nutballs is like banning Islam because of Al-Qaeda.

Wanna know what's stupid about my College's weapon policy:

We're not allowed to have knives of any kind (including kitchen knives and pocket knives).

Architecture students are required to purchase knives for classes... From the bookstore... engraved with the school logo...

Although I will admit they don't enforce the knife thing unless they find drugs or booze in your room. Then you're screwed, because having a kitchen knife and booze obviously means you're about to shank someone.
