Dont like it... find another school.

geeze.

and why the fuck would you need to carry around a stun gun?

are you such a pussy that you're afraid of getting assaulted on your way to class?

In my two years at university there were five rapes in the maze of one of the weirdly architected buildings.

Bad crap happens. It's logical to play the odds and not carry weapons, because you likely will never need them. It's also logical to carry a weapon you will likely never need. Both positions are valid and it's pointless to make fun of either side.

Wow, really? I was talking shit when I asked if your uni really is so unsafe you feel like you need to carry a gun. Where do you live? It must suck ass, where ever it is.

So you're comparing my WHOLE COUNTRY to your uni? I don't know if anyone has EVER been raped at the campus at which I studied, let alone TWENTY PER YEAR.

ah heck, it pulled up in a search on your location and I failed to check the stats. Let's see if your crappy country does a decent job publishing such info. One min.

That's such an asinine argument. Are the millions of americans who keep guns in their house for protection pussies because their afraid of getting assaulted in their own home?

Geesus, after reading the rest of this thread, some of you must think that universities are some magical place that's immune to crime. Just because nothing ever happened to you doesn't mean that it couldn't and if it's a state school and you live in a C&C state, I would argue that you should be allowed to carry regardless what the campus says.

What, the heading "NEW ZEALAND CRIME STATISTICS" didn't tip you off?

Welcome to the internet, where we argue in real time.

Go through the data manipulation if you want
Since I'm feeling generous let's just go with convictions:
Tauranga 2008:
Violent --------------------------- 847 (7 rapes)
Against other persons ----------208
Property -------------------------2460
Drug -------------------------------621
Against Justice -------------------1293
Against good order ---------------827

Just to note, Davis is a small town in a farming community, not an inner city ghetto.

My ORIGINAL POINT being that crime happens, and it can happen anywhere. Don't be so quick to cast aspersions on other locations because of your naivete about what happens in your own community.

Yes... bad crap happens. Smart people learn how to avoid bad crap.

If there were 5 rapes in one area in 2 years... then.... AVOID THE DAMN AREA.

If you're afraid of the "maze of one of the architectured building" ... then avoid that area... find another way to get to where you're going. So what if it takes another 5-10min. Or.. arrange a petition to get more security in that area. Take the issue to your student council or student government... and get them to have the school put more security patrols.. or cameras.. into the area.

If the big cities, when there's a rash of robberies or assaults or rapes in a particular area... you know what they do? They beef up security.

As i said earlier... avoid putting yourself in a situation.

And as others including myself have pointed out, avoidance doesn't always work. Sometimes trouble finds you in the best of places after making the best of choices. I'm glad you've been lucky enough to avoid that so far, but unless you live your life in a basement you'll probably encounter it at some point or other. Ever blown out a tire in a pothole in a questionable part of town at night? Ever come out of the place you eat at regularly in the best part of town there is to find a hispanic gangbanger inspecting your car, who then gives you an eyes-wide death glare? I've been through both, and gotten lucky.

By your logic I should just have avoided that 1 mile stretch of bad town and gone several miles out of my way, every day to work and back, just in the off chance that that would happen. Nevermind that it's my first blown tire in 6 years. Even less logically, by your "logic" I should have known that I would have eventually encountered a hispanic gangbanger as such after eating at the same place regularly, therefore I should have... what? Never gotten take-out in the good part of town? Ever?

And you call me a pussy and scared of my own shadow. Like I said earlier, I'd hate to see how your pompous ass would react to those situations if you had less luck than me and your vaunted avoidance was no longer an option.

How the hell do you avoid a building where you have classes, counselor meetings, and other business? Oh, and a building that is right along the quad (central area of campus). It's not like women were going out of their way to the darkest most abandoned areas of campus, the building is just EXTREMELY conducive to getting people lost and keeping things out of view.
