YART: What really irks me about religion...

Why do so many people claim to be fervent followers or believers of what they claim to believe, yet don't have a clue what it means, or have objectively searched other religions, etc...?

They must come to one of two conclusions:
1. Theirs is the right one, they don't even have to study anything else - they just know it because that's what they're told to believe.

2. There are multiple truths or multiple Gods.

I know some Italians and Chinese who are Catholic because they were brought up Catholic, and they make the Catholic rituals such a central part of their lives, yet they know next to nothing about the Bible or care to read the Gospel. My co-worker even snapped at me when I asked her to explain why they baptize babies when they clearly cannot make the decision to accept Christ on their own.

You look in the Middle East with all the mess thats there, and gosh - I mean think of all the ignorant little kids taught to give their lives up for Jihad - and they have no way of knowing if the truth just *might* lie elsewhere...

Look also at the Jews - the Bible says they're the chosen ones... Ever heard of a Jewish missionary? It's not a religion - it IS an ethnicity...

My point is - why do so many people insist on following a faith just because they identify it with their ethnicity? Why don't they see that their ethnicity has nothing to do with it? What part of that makes it truthful? That's so arrogant.

As a Christian - I'm taught that it is about glorifying God. Even if you stand by your faith due to ethnic pride - its only about glorifying yourself.

Just my two cents - flame away...

I predict that this thread will be at least a 100 posts long and by the end of it, someone might get banned/vacationed.

Religion is a tool used to take people's attention away from more pressing matters.

Is that where the whole Demiurge thing comes from?

Because most people are stupid and lazy. It really is amazing how many people claim to be of faith and have no clue what The Bible says.

im with you up to the "more pressing matters"
i think religion can be a tool for inner growth and a greater understanding of our universe.
however, for the most part, it seems to be little more than an addiction and a tool for profit.

Agreed. I have no problem with religion per se, I just have a problem with whackos trying to impress their beliefs on me.

What you say has some merit but its gonna turn ugly =\

In the unlikely event that you would actually like to add to a discussion, would you consider posting something intelligent?

sadly, the answer is simple. people are ignorant. they don't think. they don't search. they just take what was handed to them, without ever questioning what it really was (for some people, this is the *only* way they would ever have a religion). and yet somehow they have this extremely arrogant pride in what they believe in. and bash other people's belief with it. sad, but true.

i have no problem with the people who peacefully practice their faith and don't shove it down everyones throat.

It all comes down to the simple, misguided, and necessary concept of "blind faith".....without it most religions would fall apart.

i don't think chinese christians feel it is a part of their ethnicity though, if i'm wrong, well then i guess they're dumber than i thought

My reference was to a Catholic friend of mine who insists on going to Catholic mass but only on occasion, even though she refuses to discuss her faith or what it means to her, with anyone. She was Catholic because she went to a Catholic school in HK and was raised Catholic.

I'm actually a Chinese Christian - my mother is athiest and my dad became Christian when I was 8.

what I hate is some hardcore [religious people , thinking that if a person does not practice their religion, he/she is not "saved"...

This is more like it.

Why limit it to Christianity? It's the same for all of them.

You're damned right, and it is a sad situation.

I still can't begin to comprehend how people laugh at the idea of Zeus, Apollo, Hermes....etc yet are so quick to believe in Jehovah, God, Jesus, Allah........

What's the fvcking difference? How come it's ridiculous and illogical to believe in some gods, yet perfectly acceptable to believe in others?

Sadly it does boil down to the fact that they believe it because it's what their parents told them to believe.

My mom is a devout Catholic. It bothers me though how she became that way. As a teenager, her parents told her to go to different churches, religious sects, ....etc...... to find herself and decide what she believs in . (Yet another issue is that she was only allowed to visit Christian churches. Temples and Mosques were off limits and not even considered...)

How in the hell does one just go from church to church and decide that one group's view is correct and another is wrong? It's not like there's any proof or logic behind it. The priests don't sit there and explain exactly with facts why they're right.

Being raised on a certain religion is understandable (still ridiculous though...) , but picking and choosing without any kind of proof or logical explanation is just insane.
