YAPT: I had the run in with the PoPo for speeding.

Well today, I was driving all day, and I was driving down to go to Bed Bath Beyond at like 8pm ish.
I was taking a back road doing about 30mph when all of a sudden I see the Police Lights.

I immediately pulled over and turned off the car.
He first asked me do you know how fast you were going and I said yes I was doing 29 - 30mph.
He tells me " You were doing 37mph" I was like that must be way off, I looked at the speedometer and it was at 30.

He asks me what the speed limit on that road is and I told him 35mph. The 35mph is the next street over and the street I was on was 25mph. Still I was only 5 over but he told me I was going 37. I wasn't gonna argue and get him upset.He asks me for my License and registration blah blah, I gave it to him quickly and he went back to his PoPo cruiser.

Came back about 10 min later, I could have swore he was writing something in his car, but came back and gave me a warning.

I figured he was trying to meet his quota for the month or something when he pulled me over and I was talking to my friend telling him, I think he's writing a ticket.

I have a clean record . Actually first time being pulled over for speeding. I guess that helped.
I'm kinda glad I had all my windows down, I have tints on my car only 30% but it's not allowed on the front window.

Anyhow I got off on a ticket that's could have been easily $200 beans. Overall it was a great day, getting off with a warning " told me that I should feel lucky cuz he's letting it go and he didn't want to see me that night again. " maybe he thought I was down there to purchase some weed or something ".

The lesson to this thread is, be courteous and respectful. They'll most likely let you off with a warning.

LoL going 4-5 miles over is pretty normal I'd say.
I was surprised he pulled me over.

Come on...

Going 5 over these days is the least you need to do to keep from being a road hazard. Reckless speeding is stupid and immature, but 5 over is not the same at all. That being said, you should have known what the speed limit was for the road.

I once got pulled over supposedly doing 40 in a 30 in Illinois (I live in Indiana). I was NOT doing 40, because as I turned on the road I saw him and made sure I was not speeding....so he pulls me over and giveme a ticket...then says "You'll just have to pay it cause you wouldn't want to drive all the way back up here" THAT JERK! Only cause I was from outta state I got a ticket....makes me so mad and nothing I can do at all...sigh

Anyway, still lucky you didn't get one...being nice doesn't help normally unless you are a women....my girlfriend NEVER gets tickets, just warnings.

being curteous and respectful doesn't get you off with a warning all the time.
i did a california rolling stop at around 10pm at night near my girlfriends house (I normally stop all the way) and this CHP (california highway patrol) officer pulled me over and gave me a rolling stop ticket. BOO TO HIM!
I was polite and everything yet that asshole gave me a ticket anyway. WTF!? Clean record too here. Cost me $135 dollars. BAH!
I hope he gets a rolling stop ticket too.

Why did you get all of your windows tinted when you obviously know that's not allowed in NJ? I hope they fail you on your next inspection. I hate people who think the law doesn't apply to them.

30% is really light. I've passed by police many of occasions and they don't seem to mind.
as far as Inspection goes, i won't have problem passing it.

Politely asking to see the RADAR readout would not only have gone against his chances by calling into question the officer's integrity, but it's also prohibited in many states because of the risks associated with getting a motorist out of their vehicle and having them walk back to the officer's vehicle with traffic going by, etc. Besides, a lot of places permit the officer to cite for the "highest observed speed" and not necessarily what he "locked in" on the RADAR.

BTW, this is just another example of what I've been saying all along. He had tinted windows and although unintentional, he alleviated the threat that the officer percieves by having them down. How about this, the next time one of you gets pulled over for a "reasonable" infraction, try placing your hands clearly in the car, preferably on the window ledge of your open driver's side window until the officer approaches and take careful instruction from him/her when they ask for license, registration and proof of insurance. I can damn near guarantee that you will get out of the ticket just on that action alone.

Yeah I know 30% is really light... but if they wanted to allow 30% tint, they would have allowed it. Why won't you have a problem passing inspection?

That was like my first warning..

I got pulled over late at night coming home from work. I was doing 50 in what I thought was a 45mph street. Cop pulls me over, tells me he clocked me at 51 and asks me what the speed limit was. I was like "I'm guessing it's not 45" and he says it's 35. He then asks me where I'm from and what I'm doing here and I tell him I'm from the next town over. Gave me a warning cause he thought I was new in town so he said..

any posters here cops? if you are, if you pull someone over and they have a radar detector, do you give more tickets than warning to those with them or those without?

That's why I took the lawyer's way out and said "damn near guarantee". If it wasn't clear, doing that alone and copping an attitude or other negatively perceived action negates the action suggested.

To answer your question for myself, no. I do not care. If I bagged them using a RADAR detector, it's more of a "pleasure" for me to prove that they wasted their money for the most part so I won't write a citation. I, personally, do not like to write tickets though. I'd much rather take my time on the stop and make you late or take your time rather than hit your pocket book. I've gotten tickets myself and all they do is cause resentment because they're so tangible. Time, is not always so tangible as money is, although some would say it is anyway.

To answer for my fellow officers that I've worked with over the years, many of them will write you to both take "pleasure" as I do and also to get the satisfaction of recouping the cost of that RADAR detector hanging on your windshield on that ticket they're gonna write you. I would say, based on my experience, that most officers will cite you for speeding if they observe a RADAR detector, more to just prove a point than anything.

My windows were down the whole time I was driving. It's summer and I kept my windows down, so he'd have no clue that I had the fronts tinted.
I wasn't moving around or anything I sat still.
