Was doing one of my rotations at an unnamed psychiatric hospital in an unnamed unit. When a patient started to get very agitated and hostile. He was cussing telling us to F-off, saying he is gunna snap peoples necks etc.... He started to pickup a table to throw at a Volunteer, so i stopped grabbed onto the table, and said "Please calm down" halfway through the sentance while my mouth was open he spit violently all over my face and mouth. He then proceeded to throw chairs into the computers on the unit, knocking off a monitor, and trying to attack someone. The charge nurse called a code green (which is an All Available staff call for assistance). We finally restrained him and injected him with Haloperidol.

Suffice to say it felt vile getting spit on. After my time was up i went home took a shower and rinsed with half water half rubbing alcohol. However, right after the incident I was able to rinse my face.

Yuck

hope he doesnt have the hiv

The medical director said that the chances of HIV transmission is very low via saliva. And he looked up current CDC recommendations. It said unless he recently had a tooth extracted or had a bloody mouth then im safe for HIV. However, wednesday i have to go to get my hepatitis titers drawn to see if he possibly had that. By next week the blood tests should be back so i can see if that little fvcker had anything.

Getting spit on sends me into a violent rage. It's just one of those things that triggers a biological reaction that tells me I NEED to severly hurt whoever it was that spit. In this case the person wasn't healthy, but any other time.. GRR.

wow, if that guy did have anything that transmitted to you... I really don't want to think about how pissed I would be, and what I would do to that disgusting asshat (if I was in your position)

Well ill tell you the patient was under 14 years old. And hes has psychiatric problems, it still doesnt make it right. But then again they sent him to inpatient and i would get severely punished if not sued for attacking a patient... lol.

i saw something like that on volume one of Jackass...

well, at least it is not one of thoese reeses monkies(?), one spat on a lady and killed her.

Took an "all available staff" call to stop a 14 year old?

Retarded, yes, but in this day and age you can only use nonviolent restraint on a patient or the parents/relatives cry bloody murder and sue the sh!t out of the institution. America ftw.

I hear Roberto Alomar is currently available for employment. He would be an awesome orderly.

*HOCCCCKK ... TWAAHHHH*

I'm not lawyer, but I believe if you're not using excessive violence, then you'd be alright. I mean, a full Nelson would have sufficed.

Here is the problem, we have specific protocol for patients who are attacking themselves or others. When the kid is spitting, throwing chairs, breaking things scratching you and trying to grab you in any way shape or form you need to have 1 staff member per limb. You cant just tackle the kid, because as apac said godforbid he cracks his head on the way down the entire hospital would be sued. Therefore we need to use non-voilent methods of retraining him. Retarded? Yes. Less effective? Yes. But saves the hospital from lawsuites? Most def!

The days of tackling, full-nelson, smacking with clubs, and putting in straight jackets is over in the top-notch psychiatric hospitals. However, i cant say the same thing for some backwoods psychiatric hospital in katamandoo.
