I'm still confused by the Archive concept.
Archive is just a general storage area for your emails. If you select one or more emails and hit Archive, they leave the Inbox and are stored away in the archive. They are not deleted and you can still search for and view them.

If you label email(s) and Archive them, it's then similar to folders in that you'll see the Labels on your lower left sidebar and if you click the label you'll see all the emails under that label, just as if it was a folder.

think of it as a recycle bin on your pc. with folders.

I get a ridiculous number of spam in my Yahoo account. Not true for Hotmail 🙂Q) or Gmail.

Folders?! Are you kidding? Rules + Tags is far superior to folders in every conceivable way.

Is it possible in gmail to have emails that you have tagged not show up in inbox? I like keeping my inbox clean and i can just transfer emails to appropriate folders.

Archive

Hmm interesting..just checked it out. I still like the folders concept, dunno why though.

use labels to simulate folders if you want.

Never used Yahoo, but people are comparing Yahoo to it that can only be good. It's about time stuff caught up to Gmail.

Only thing I can say is the conversation way to organize emails is great! I wish Outlook did this - my work inbox sucks.

Interestingly, I receive emails to my gmail account even if the . in my username is omitted.
it's suppose to work that way. early on though, I don't think it did. So a few people who had first.last and firstlast got screwed over. I do not use gmail for a professional account because I can't get first.last. I have firstlast## which is very annoying (I don't use it either, but grabbed it in case).

Can it IMAP?

Dunno. But if you want imap then the service your using is pretty immaterial cause you will be just routing all your messages through outlook. From a web-based emails point of view, its definately got the upper hand on gmail. gmail hasn't really improved for the last year or so. im really digging the interface.

I use Gmail as a front-end catch-all for all my ISP, personal domain, and web-mail accounts using Gmail's automatic POP downloading, then sync my single Gmail account with my Blackberry in real-time. Any email sent to any of my accounts shows up in my Gmail and Blackberry in-boxes at the same time, and I can use Gmail on either my computer or Blackberry app to send email from any of those accounts by simply selecting the account from a drop-down menu above every message.

Not only that, but I can shift in-progress GoogleTalk chats from any Gmail computer to my Blackberry and back on the fly, simply by sending the next message from the device I want to use next. The next reply automatically gets routed to the proper device.

Can Yahoo do all that?

I know a lot of people use that for filtering. They'll give the address out with a period in different places depending on who it is so they can automatically sort incoming messages.

And I didn't bother going for firstlast or first.last, I went straight for firstInitiallastname

Is anyone even close to using the 6.6GB of email storage space gmail provides? I just realized I'm sitting at 2%.

Same here, and by the time i get anywhere near that 6.6GB limit, the limit will probably be bumped up to several terabytes

Google spies on you, when I check my Gmail I ALWAYS get ad's that go along with what the person said in the email. That's an invasion of privacy I don't need, I understand it's free but I would pay to have a Gmail account where I wasn't spied on.

adding everyone I send an email to my contact list is RETARDED. and I don't like tags, I like a list of folders on the left hand side of my screen. I will never seen how tags are any better, they're just different. And to my I like them a lot less. And yes, I know how to use them.

visible folders > tags or anything else.

vs

"And yes, I know how to use them."

these 2 statements are in conflict. if you truly knew how to use them, you would know that superficially, tags allow functionality similar to folder, plus MORE.

When I open my gmail, I get a list of tags just like I would folders. Tags do everything folders do and more. There is really no comparison.

You can use the "+" character for filtering. For any address XX@gmail.com, you will receive all mail from XX+YYYY@gmail.com ("XX" is your gmail username, "YYYY" is any acceptable string of text).

The problem with this method is that a lot of services will see the '+' as an invalid email address.

Doesn't Yahoo now use Ajax? That's probably why people are having speed/incompatibility issues.

I friggin hate that. The new my.yahoo.com is also atrocious.

This has to be sarcastic? Yahoo sucks, /thread, their interface is slow and bloated and has to many unwanted adds/news bs. It's slow, doesn't have aim /voice chat/text chat built-in, nor has the best archive/search feature of any email client. Gmail does have all of that. Gmail also happens to have some of the best anti-spam out there, and more space then i know what to do with. Works great with google docs and the rest google's fleet of 1337 programs. Calender rocks, and we get back to the fact that-

YAHOO EPIC FAILS
