Okay, so I am looking for a cheap gun, I was thinking bolt action rifle, or shotgun. This gun will be used almost exclusively at the range. Any suggestions, looking to keep it under $500. If you need any more information just ask.

That's pretty broad. Just range? how longs the range? If less than 50 yards a bolt action type rifle is pointless.
If you just want to blast stuff, get a Pump Shotgun ~$300 max. invest in some good ear muffs and shooting glasses. $100 will go a long way in 100rnd packs of bird shot at walmart.

Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 or heck, even a Mossberg Maverick 88.

50 yards is perfect for .22

Saiga in .223, 7.62x39, or 5.45x39 (if you don't mind cleaning corrosive ammo)

They go for about $350. They're basically AK47's so you can add a pistol grip and regular buttstock to make them look cooler if you desire :awe:

Range is 25 yard indoor, looking for an outdoor range in the area, but it IS maryland /sigh

Mmm, range toys.

For a .22LR bolt action, the CZ 452 isn't a bad choice. I'd suggest going for a semi like a Ruger 10/22, but to each their own. At 25 yards it's not even doing .22 that much credit and the range might have a velocity cap on the rounds used based on the length of it so a larger caliber might not be an option.

Seconded on a Remington 870 or Moss 500 but I give preference to the former.

plenty of inexpensive but decent .22 bolt action rifles and ammo cheap (twice as much as it used to be but still pretty cheap).

Mini 14 looks pricey, the 10/22 looks nice in price though.

Made this decision myself last week. Found a synthetic carbine model with a 4x scope for $300 total. Even at Gander Mtn, chain king of firearm overpricing, was still a pretty good deal. Bit of a pain to clean though...I recommend a boresnake.

I have fired a .22lr before and 9mm and .40

I found .40 to be the most satisfying to shoot with 9mm being close (probably about equal) the .22 wasnt really satisfying but it was not unsatisfying for me.

Mosin Nagant or SKS. The first is bolt action and around $1-200, the second semi auto and around $300 or so.

Mosin is a full sized battle rifle roughly the equivalent of the 30-06. SKS is a intermediate cartridge 7.62x39mm. Very similar to a 30-30.

For a 15 yd indoor range? .22 all the way.

Ruger 10/22, Marlin Model 60 (or 795 if you prefer detachable mags). For a bolt action .22, Marlin XT-22 all the way.

For a "tactical" .22, there's the Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22 (Basically a .22 AR-15) or the Kel-Tec SU-22

Looking at the savage mark II thanks for the suggestion, no Walmarts within 50 miles of here are licensed to sell firearms, Basspro has it for about $220 bucks tho.
