YAGT: Should I make her pay me back?

Hey guys

About 3 weeks ago I bought my girlfriend a cellphone, and paid for the service.

Some of you might ask why I was doing this, suffice to say her parents are cruel heartless people, and they barely ever let her talk on the phone or go on MSN.. or go out for that matter.

Anyways last night (2 weeks after I managed to get her the phone).. her parents find it, confiscate the phone.. and it's gone and I'll never get it back..

This phone set me back $100 bucks + service fees this month, and she's already lost it.

Should I get verbalize my anger? Make her pay me back.

I'm already pretty pissed off abotu this.

ummm ask the parents for YOUR phone back? you bought it, you own it, you pay for it, it is yours.

after watching more judge judy, hatchet, joe, etc than i could take last week it was clear that whoever paid the bills for the phone owned the phone, unless the person making calls charged up entirely way too much.

would you ask anyone else to pay you for a gift they lost?

I bought it for her, not as a gift, but so she could talk to me. I expected to get it back after the relationship was over.

Why would they take the phone?
Get it back from them.

They're jerks, they hate me. As a matter of fact, they hate all non-asian non-biblethumping guys.

I'm already cancelling the service.. I'm jjust wondering what I should do with the $100 it cost me for the phone and it's activation fee.

then you should get it back from the parents. everything is still in your name right? they are in possession of what is not legally theirs afaik.

She should not have to repay a gift that you gave her.

You need to possibly explain to her parents that you bought the phone so she could use it in an emergency and have an on-going service committment.

The phone belongs to you and they should return it. If the GF is under-age, then the parents have the right to deny her the phone.

Her parents have your phone and won't give it back? Is that something like stealing property? If you really wanted to piss them off, you could call the cops or something...

You bought someone a cell phone (and service) even though you anticipated that the relationship wasn't going to last? 😕

We've been dating for a year and a half.. it wasn't nearly as much about our relationship as it was about giving her contact with the rest of the world.

I felt really badly for her, she could never talk or go out with anyone.

Same thing I was thinking. As for the phone SHE didn't lose it, through no fault of her own her PARENTS took it. Why should she pay for it? This is between you and her parents. If she physically lost it while out and about that would be a different story.

get the phone back from her parents, and sell it.

but I've watched enough Judge Judy to know that you're out of luck for whatever you paid for service / getting the phone activated, though 😉
