Yes a good 1911 is heavy. Heavy = less recoil.

Nope - they're both the same frame (X frame, which is the size up from N frame) meaning all dimensions are the same in terms of other diameter of the cylinder and whatnot. Since the outer diameter is the same size and the inner bore for the 460 is smaller, you have a thicker wall for the 460 and it's a lot harder to cause the cylinder to flex with hot loads.

tl;dr - you can shoot hotter/faster rounds out of the 460, and in the end I think the 460 can beat the hottest 500 loads.

Both are wrist breakers though - get a bipod 🙂

My carry 1911 likely has recoil similar to a Glock 22, and that's because my 1911 is cut down in both the barrel length and the grip length, and has an aluminum frame and a steel slide (whereas the typical GI spec 1911 is all steel.) A G30 or G36 (the compact and sub compact .45 models from Glock) likely have more recoil than a Glock 22 as well.

If you were to make all things equal in terms of weight, size and such, the base SAAMI 40 load would have a sharper recoil than the 45 would. I think the 45s out there generally have as much recoil, it's just slower and easier to the gun on target. Throw in +p loads and 40 gets to be a little over the top.

I believe you're thinking of nickel-plated cases. I don't think I've ever seen aluminum cased ammo market for self defense. And while aluminum is technically reloadable most of the cases I've seen are Berdan primed, and I've also heard that you'll probably only get one reload in before the case splits because aluminum is more brittle.

This will be quite effective at perforating certain meth addicts if they decide to invade my home.

Find someone who reloads and you can have some fun with that....well if your wrist can handle it.

Supposedly after many, many reloadings the plating may start to flake off, but that's the only issue I've heard of.

Never heard of the plating cracking off. But they do tend to have split necks sooner than brass. Its a bit harder of a metal and the expanding and crimping wear out the necks a bit more. Still talking a good number of reloads though before it happens. its why if i have the choice i always go brass over nickle. Though my 357mag is all nickle right now and havent had a single issue so far (but only on reload 2)

FWIW I've only ever shot two identical guns in .45/.40. USP compacts. Similar age, externally the same. .45 is way more manageable in that case, and I think all fair comparisons would end similarly.

The .45 might not exert a total amount of rearward force less than the .40 (i.e. total measurable recoil). But .45 has more of a 'thump' to it where .40 is just sharp and seems to go all-in on felt recoil as fast as possible.

I use CCi500's. The only magnum i use is for 44mag and those are the CCI large pistol magnums. But thats just me. I know accurate says they use magnum primers for their load data. I say use what you have. Unless pushing for a hot load or something its my opinion that you dont need magnum primers. Of course it also depends on the powder used. Some powders benefit greatly from the magnum primers while others could careless about them. I generally use ball powders as often as possible and they ignite pretty easily.

I do 158gr plated bullets. 158gr RNFP x-treme bullets. I dont load them hot though.

I like 1911's. . . I really do. I just find Sigs to be better guns personally; easier to take down and clean, better capacity, less obtrusive safety features, more fun to shoot, easier to carry.

I enjoy shooting .45acp, although I 'love' shooting .357sig. Being able to swap out a barrel and plink cheaper .40s&w ammunition on the same gun is a plus as well, although Glocks can do the same just as easily.
