Now that I'm out of the military business, I foresee an almost microscopic chance that I'll ever need to defend my life with a sidearm. Even if I did, the weapon platform would be the very least of my concerns; and I certainly don't need a super-tweaked 1911 to do the job. I seriously doubt I would choose it whether for routine carry (which I don't) or even if I were able to select a weapon at my leisure for a later encounter. That's not to say that I would discourage others from using it if that's what they prefer; but I'd feel there are plenty of options out there just as good or better for a lot cheaper. Especially in regards to the OP and other new shooters, I'd recommend something like an FNX in their preferred caliber before a 1911.

Much like Alien Vs. Predator: I'd rather have it and not need it, than the other way around.

Nothing wrong with that, I'm glad there are folks out there that feel that way and keep buying. If it weren't for you all, the manufacturers would stop designing new weapons and local stores would probably shut their doors. I certainly don't buy often enough to keep them in business based on my own. Again, I don't begrudge anyone for their preferences - whatever you feel most comfortable and are most accurate with is the best firearm for you. The 1911 is a fine platform, it's just not what I'd recommend to someone new for their first purchase, or probably even second or third.

Good stuff - funny, I just recommended the FDX series a few posts back. I know you were looking for a holster for it, did you ever find one?
Yes I did. A DeSantis speed Scabbard. Also the Serpa for my XD9sc fits. Not a great fit but it holds it secure. Right now the FNX is my home defense gun. I'll carry it when the weather cools down some.

For a cheap but quality gun the FNX is the ticket right now. $400 w/ night sights is a great deal. I haven't bought a gun in a couple years and am wanting a Shield but you still can't find the damned things. I actually want two, a .40 for me and a 9mm for the misses.

Just picked up this bad boy:

FN_SCAR_17_2.jpg

On order for it:

Trijicon ACOG 3.5x35 Dual Ill Riflescope (TA11H-308G)
Harris Bipod BRM-S and LT706 QD Swivel Mount
LaRue Tactical ACOG Mount QD LT100

For Future Purchase (was straining the savings with the above):

Magpul SCAR selector switches
Magpul AFG2 Angled Fore Grip
Magpul Rail Covers
PWS SRX Rail extension

check with your local gun.store. we ordered my dad one last Tuesday and they said it is about a 60 day wait period on them. also they did mention a lot of places are doi.g that so their o.e or two they get in are already sold. just a thought

If price is a major barrier for you, then the Sig Pro 2022 is an even peer competition for the FNX. I'm not sure where your aversion to "plastic" guns comes from since they're perfectly fine weapons.

In my hands, they feel awful. A nice 1911 with wood grips feels lightyears better, and no plastic gun will match that. No plastic gun to date matches a well tuned 1911 trigger pull.

That the 16 or 17? If you're putting an acog on it, I hope the 16 🙂

Yeah, FNXs don't usually go for ~$400. Even the cheapest place around here doesn't go for less than $500 (surprisingly, in NY) and I've seen as high as $650.

I'd guess the 17 from the magazines. 😛 Very nice rifle, though. They don't let those go for cheap.

It's a 17. I'll eventually get a higher powered scope for it. But mostly where I have gone shooting there isn't much use for anything past what an ACOG is good for.

I haven't shot the rifle at all. Won't get to for about a week and a half. Looking forward to it 🙂

How much is such a rifle? That looks freakin awesome.

$2900. I got it for %15 off, but that still makes it $2465, so not cheap. Then you start adding in all the other stuff (scope, bipod, etc.) and you are pushing $4000. And you haven't even bought Ammo yet 😛

It was a post deployment gift to myself with some of the money I saved.
