No, open carry is stupid. It draws attention to yourself which is tactically unsound. I am amazed at all the armchair commandos who dont understand this simple principle.

Erm, walking down the street isn't meant to be tactical. Open carrying pretty much makes any bad guy not wanna fuck with you. Same effect as me being 6'6" 240"... I'd be a poor mugging target.

But this.

I figure if you live in a place where you feel the need to open carry to "scare" or "intimidate" people from attacking you, it's time to move.

Well no shit. I'm not suggesting that people open carry just as I'm not suggesting that someone should be 6'6" 240. If its natural, is it was it is. Open carrying is actually natural for me since I've done it professionally. Its not frowned on where I live but it isn't overly common either. If I owned a small business or had frequent local business I'd absolutely 100% open Cary. Running to the store quick or whatnot, concealed works.

Open carry in a business is something different than on the streets. Maybe I missed the context of previous posts on the subject.

I'm in the camp of open carry just makes you a target. Either the first to be shot when something goes sideways or a snatch and grab which happens more than you would think. If you OC please use a holster with some kind of decent retention.

Was just giving the conditions in which id open carry in the area that I live. I'm not a huge advocate of it, but I don't see any downsides.

PA is an open-carry legal state and my LTCF allows me to open carry in Philly if I so chose, but I prefer to carry concealed. I haven't really seen anyone exercise it in my time here so far, but that's not saying much.

The biggest downside these days to open carry is the sheeple factor, among people and police alike. If police aren't around to see you OC, someone will likely call them and they'll interrogate you to make sure you're not some kind of criminal and it can lead to a very touchy situation. Just a few months ago someone was disarmed in Philly for legally OCing. It's just a waste of everyone's time. I imagine there are scenarios where it could be in one's benefit to open carry, but in many cases it will just draw unwanted attention.

This. Although I'm sure ATOT's resident tough guy don't-care-what-anyone-else-thinks crowed will chime in on what pussies we are for caring about public opinion.

Back from the range again today. Went to an outdoor range to take a couple of rifles.

Holy shit that 30-30 kicks like a fucking mule. First shot I did on the line everyone nearby turned and went, "WTF was that?? You got a canon or something?"

Loud and kicking. Fun as shit though. Kicked so hard it sent the rear sights flying after the 5th shot or so. Had to track it down. Lucky I bring tools with me to the range. Took a bit to get the sights on target. Otherwise not a problem with the gun at all. But had to quit after 80 shots. Got a big ol' bruise on my clavicle right now.

Switched over to the pistol range. Their pistol range is "meh" for a description. Fixed distance of 15 yards I think. They give you 4 targets to shoot at for the price. I shot the 1911, the PT92, and the PT111 again. I managed to pick up some extra magazines for the 1911. Bought 3 Chip McCormick shooting stars, a promag, and a kimber ultra series mag. The factory mag is an Act mag. My 1911 did not like those other mags very much. Failed to feed or eject on the very last shot of those mags everytime. Except the promag. Promag one wouldn't lock back the slide after the last shot. The factory mag fed like butter every time though. Guess I'll be buying the factory mags only from now on then.

The PT92 and the PT111 are still performing flawlessly since their return from Taurus repairs. Zero issues with another 200 rounds through each. Which is just about 700 rounds through them both about now. All 3 are dead nuts accurate right now since I adjusted the sights on the 1911. Bought some new grips for the 1911 and some HiViz fiber sights for the front sight and some adjustable night sights for the rear. I shot the bulls out on all 4 targets for the hell of it. The people around me in the lanes were like, "Wow, never seen anyone shoot that well." Gave me a warm fuzzy at least 🙂 But to me it doesn't really that hard to shoot with 1 inch groups on a gun that isn't screwing up at 15 yards. Every one else up and down the line were barely hitting the outside of the outer ring of the bulls with any consistency. Just seems strange to me.

Heh, I love getting reactions like that. My friend was shooting his Mosin at the indoor range and as soon as he started you could see everyone in the range turn to see wtf he was using.

Ok, 7.62x39 may be weaker, but your other common .30 caliber rifle cartridges are more powerful than a .30-30.

No one else shoots 7.62x51, or hunting rifles.

I haven't done this yet, but I look forward to the next time I take my .308 (with muzzle brake) to the indoor range. Should get at least a few looks.

I always view it the same as force protection. You try to blend into the populace as a means to reduce terrorism/crime etc. in a foreign country. Open carry when you're just amongst the populace makes you stand out.

Lol I was told to blend in during a walking patrol in Khost Afghanistan. I'm 6'6", carrying an m249, man pack radio, ICOM radio, desert camos, and a bunch of other shit. I started cracking up. Then there were two sf guys on the patrol wearing a ton less, although still somewhat military in appearance speaking farsi Lol.

Keeps getting better. You can cover that 5 shot group with a dime. 100 yards, .223cal.

Lol, I never tried to blend in there or Iraq. I figured those recommendations for blending in were for civilized countries. 😛

Very nice shooting! Cant wait till it warms up a bit and stops raining so i can get out and do some distance shooting. I still havent fired 4 of my rifles haha. To be fair one i have just been lazy and havent made ammo for it yet since i was waiting for my suppressor to come in (my 300blk) and my 45-70 i only got a week before i had to go out of town.

On guns ive spent way to much in the last week. Spent over 1k on crap i dont even have a use for right at the moment >.<

Thanks. That group was with factory ammo. Do you think I could tighten it up with carefully made hand loads? Regarding your purchases, did you "panic" buy?

You might be able to tighten it up. But with a grouping that small already you arent talking about gaining all that much. So sort of depends on what you want. Super small groups...then yep handloading is the way to go. Just small groups easily? Then factory is just fine. But you also have to figure in you really have to experiment to get tighter groups with handloads. Have to start just different amounts of powder (some people even go down to .1 grains but .2 or .3 spreads would be decent too) then you can factor in overall lengths and just all sorts of crap. Biggest factor over all that is the cost. I can make good match grade ammo for half the cost of factory match grade. If you only go for .223 bolt action type reloading you might not save that much (figuring in equipment costs) though. SInce i reload for everything i have easily paid for all my equipment. Hell just looking at 44mag its amazing. I made ~600 rounds. With my brass and all it only cost ~18 cents a round for my "hot" loads (bit less for plinking rounds). Compare that to factory just whatever ammo and youd be lucky to pay 50 cents a round. So with that difference i saved 180 bucks. Which covers my press and dies just in 600 rounds. THe other caliber savings have easily paid for my other stuff (trimmers, case prep center, ect)

Sorry i kind of went on a weird tangent there. Basically if you want the smallest possible groupings, then yes handloads are the way to go. but youll spend time and materials developing the best possible load you can and really all you gain is a slightly smaller grouping. But you do save money haha.

As for my purchases...nah they werent panic buy. The 300blk i bought everything to build in august. The 45-70 i always wanted so i picked t up with giftcards (its a levergun). Things i bought in the last week are things i wanted but could have waited. Bought a 458 socom stripped upper since i wanted a big bore AR and 45-70 and 458 use same bullets.. bought 2k of 7.62x39 as well for my sks. I havent even shot the sks and i already have ~2k (though bunch of it is corrosive vs i bought non corrosive) so could have waited on that. Bought bunch of starline brass which i could have waited on but figured id get now. Didnt overpay for anything (well the ammo could be debateable but it was a good deal for now a days) but its all stuff i could have waited 6 months for too and wouldnt have noticed. Well minus the starline brass i would have ordered that sooner since i need the 45-70 brass.
