YAGT got my first AR *update w/ pics*

Bought this because I'm moving out of my mommie's house into an apartment next semester, and I didn't want to scare my new neighbors by carrying around my AK or SKS in a rifle case. If I detach the upper and lower the AR will fit in a backpack :awe: So it's much more discreet.

Upper is a Colt 6920 (unfired)
Lower is Stag Arms (Colt lowers are on the banned list here in CA), said he had fired about 150 rounds with it.
Stock is a Magpul CTR

Came with 5 mags, 200 rounds of XM193 5.56 and the original stock and pistol grip for $900 so I think it was a pretty good deal.

I'm more of an AK guy but I figure if I'm going to be impressed by an AR, Colt has the best chance :awe: I had to sell my AK to fund it so hopefully I like it. Should be more accurate at least.

Which rear sight is that? I like the magpul stuff, heard good things about Stag equipment too.

Not sure, he offered me the flip up sight or a carry handle and I took the carry handle. Not planning on mounting optics anytime soon and I like how the carry handle looks.

stoopid california.... i'm here too and thinking about an AR in the near future

You've been to calguns.net right? It's a great resource

What's the purpose of the large cylinder around the barrel? Just something to hold on to that doesn't get too hot?

I think in a year or so you will be glad you switched to the AR platform. :awe:

Personally, I feel safer knowing ScheidnerGuy is armed.

Most gun threads don't concern me, but the idea of schneider with an assault rifle kind of scares me...

It's not an assault rifle, it's semiautomatic and by definition assault rifles are full auto :sneaky: I prefer the term "modern sporting rifle"

Yep

He used to have an AK.. So its not a big change.

Let me know how you like the transition man. I love my AK and I love the way it shoots but there's just no denying that an AR is more accurate.

I think the AR's ergonomics are a bit better than the AK. The AK isn't uncomfortable but I'm fairly tall so the ability to have a longer length of pull with the AR is nice.

I've got a tacticool .22lr AR15 lookalike so I'm already pretty familiar with the ergonomics of the AR platform:

I actually think the AK is pretty accurate for what it is. With surplus ammo and crude ironsights I could get 3-4" groups at 100 yards out of my SGL 31. Plenty accurate to kill zombies out to 300-400 yards or so :awe:

I am more accurate with the peep sights on the .22 than I am on open sights on my commie guns, but the open sights obstruct less of your field of view so it's a pretty even tradeoff.

I've been looking at field strip videos for the AR on youtube and the AK is definitely simpler. I could have it field stripped in about 20 seconds and there's no small parts to lose or anything. If there was a zombie apocalypse I would take an AK

I dont think I've ever seen 3 different brands in one gun.

It's not uncommon with ARs to have a different brand upper and lower receiver, especially in CA where a bunch of lower receivers are on the banned list.

It's actually only two, Colt and Stag. Stocks are accessories that aren't made by the respective companies. i.e. if you buy a Colt rifle Colt didn't actually build the stock.

OP:
Overall you got a good deal. the upper is $685 and the stock is $110. So for $105 you got a slightly used complete lower from a reputable manufacturer. 200 rounds of XM193 is around $75. GI mags are ~$9 a pop so theres another $45.(ten rounders right?). Factory parts aren't worth much.

I'd say you got a good deal.

Finished mine last Friday. I built the lower but bought a complete upper.

Spike's Tactical lower
PSA LPK
Spike's Tactical 16" mid-length upper with 12" BAR rails
Magpul MIAD grip
Magpul MOE butt stock
Magpul MBUS front and rear sights
2 Magpul Pmag 30 rd. mags

I've since added 2 aluminum C-Products 30 rd. USGI style mags, swapped the black rail covers with OD green ones (to match the furniture), and SpecOps brand Patrol Sling.

The Aimpoint PRO red dot sight will arrive Tuesday.

Keep in mind if you shoot the hard nosed stuff at your local automated range, you may damage the mechanism if the bullets go through the shielding.

I go to an outdoor range that just has paper targets on static wooden target holders.

I've actually never been to an indoor range. Seems like it would be rather loud.

It is, but you should be wearing protection anyways.
Some are better than others. You should be more worried about the smoke inhalation. Some places have great ventilation, some have shit.
