My approach is - if you buy a cheap amp, it's not going to sound good even if you plug in a '52 American Vintage Tele. A Squier and a MIM Tele are both going to sound like crap through it. If you buy a Squier (preferably one made in the last couple years, as their quality is approaching Mexican Fenders) and save the rest of the money for a decent tube amp combo, then you can have a good sound for the same price. So I'd rather put most of the money into the amp.

ok, what sort of amp is a 'good amp'?

i might have enough money for the mexican tele and a decent amp.

i was looking at the Kustom Solo 16R (16w) or Marshall MG30DFX (30w)

For an amp, pick up one of the Line 6 spyders. Great sound and should last you awhile. As for the guitar http://www.rondomusic.net/Agile2500blk.htm from forums like harmony central, everyone is raving about them for being so cheap and are right on par with an epiphone. Throw in some duncan JB's and 59 in there and your set.

That actually looks pretty good. Maybe I'll sell my Epiphone Les Paul, pick one of these up brand new and pocket the cash, or better yet, take the cash and buy some real pickups. You could have a screamer for probably $450 or less.

For amps, there's a few decent solid-state modeling amps...Line 6 Spider as mentioned, Roland Cube 30 or 60, or Vox Valvetronix 30W or 50W.

If you want a real tube amp, I like the Fender Pro Jr. and Blues Jr., Peavey Classic 20 or 30 (I think they might be discontinued), or if you can spend more, the Fender Hot Rod series.

they aren't discontinued, just REALLY expensive. even if i got a cheap cheap guitar (cheapest guitar i could) i couldn't really afford a tube amp.

don't get a full tube amp unless you are hard core into it. I was going through the debate of solid vs tube and realized I don't want to deal with the fact that you have to replace tubes, tubes are noisier, tube amps cost a lot more, tubes can be sensative to outside interference, and solid states/hybrids are really getting close to the tube sound. Not too mention the fact that in order to get a good tube sound you have to flood the tubes (which basically means your volume has to be farily loud) That's why I went with Marshall AVT series. It has a single tube in the preamp that is always flooded at all volumes. I've also heard good things about the Cube though, by Roland I think.

This is what I would somebody to get them started. Both are alittle over your budget but the quality is there. Yamaha Pacifica 412 You can get one under L300 and this amp Roland Cube 15

Start with them and start saving now for better gear like a nice Fender made in Japan Strat or Tele and a nice 1-12 tube combo amp like a Mesa Boogie F-50.

i CAN afford the pacifica 412, but i kind of don't want it because i have a couple of friends with pacifica 112s and they would just think i was trying to get one up on them (they are both better guitarists than me, making it even worse in a way, however the better of the two has several other guitars so i doubt he'd be so bothered)

didn't realise there were made in japan fenders, what about the mexican tele? (i dont really want a strat either)

The quality of the Fender line out the Ensenada plant is spotty. You might get a good one. I wonder why you are seeing made in Mexico Fenders in the UK when Fender Europe uses the SMC factory in Korea for their low end Fender models.

as in the squier one?

i never knew that, i assumed all low end fenders were mexico so i could be wrong about where these guitars acutally come from...

so low end european fenders come from a factory in korea, but not the same as the squier one, and they should be similar quality to the mexican strats?

I bought my son a Epiphone Les Paul over Christmas. It's actually a pretty nice playing guitar. I was impressed with it. For $499 U.S. you can't go wrong.

Yes to your question but you might have Ensenada made strats in the UK but they should not be there.

Fender Europe goes like this

Squier, Korea , China, Indonesia
Fender, Korea SMC factory
Fender, Japan Fuji Gen Gakki factory untill the end of this year.
Fender Highway series, bodies and necks from Ensenada, Setup done in Corona, CA USA
Fender American, Corona Factory
Fender American custom shop, Corona CA

I think you left out alot of good things about tube amps. I have a 100 watt Marshall TSL 100 and yes you do have to crank the volume or use a power break to get some tone out of it. But man once you get those tubes cookin it sounds sooo sweet. Solid states/hybrids are doing ok, but to me the sound quality can never surpass all tube sound.

As for the OP, I didnt know you were from the U.K. You should try contacting them and see if they would be willing to ship overseas. You can pick the line 6 spider for probably around $250 used on ebay (older verions, not the spider II). Its an awesome amp for your room and they take a beating.

the line 6 spider IS sold in the uk and i am considering it.

i heard the agile was supposed to be sold here under the squier name (a squier/fender les paul copy?!) but nothing ever came of it. the trouble is, i would have to pay UK VAT + UK import tax + enough to ship a guitar across the atlantic, which all together is quite a lot.

it rocks

Yeah great for recording, not if you want to jam with friends though.

ALP- Agile has nothing to do with squier, squier is owned by fender.
