what ibanez guitars in that price range would you recommend?

i quote my prices in £, my max is £250-300 on the guitar and £100-150 on the amp (i would not spend £300 on the guitar AND £150 on the amp i don't think) which in theory equals ~$450-550 for the guitar but in reality but more like $300-400 as you say, because anything like that is more expensive here.

I just started playing a few months ago. I have an Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus and a little Marshall amp. Sounds good and plays pretty decent.

A little more than you want to spend, though. I probably have $500 US in everything (guitar, amp, case, strap, tuner, picks, extra strings, instrument cable, etc.).

Go for it. If it turns out you don't like playing the electric guitar much you can always sell it. Is it a Gibson, they keep they're value pretty well? If it is I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

what does that convert to in $US? my standard plus was $425, although the "list" was over a grand and the "selling price" was ~$650. The LP is a nice guitar and you can always throw in the American Gibson pickups later.

I got my Fender Squire Stratocaster for 160$US because it was a floor model.. at the local music store.

It was actually a really good thing, because it had been tweaked and setup correctly... instead of my n00bness just pulling it out of a box and trying to play it. Plays smooth and holds tune very well.

As for amp.. shrug.. we got Crate practice amps.. Crap, but cheap.. and they work. You need to work on learning how to actually play first anyway, sound will come later.

go to store and look at something. Pick up a guitar that catches your eye and see if you feel comfy playing it. If you find something that is in your price range and feels comfy, then you scored a goal right there. I got an Epiphine SG and while i love it to death, i get upset because it is not as comfy as a Fender Telecaster. I thought it would get more comfy to play as I went along, but that doe snot seem to be the case.

i am trying that. trouble is, i really want to look at ALL the guitars in that price range, and i simply can't do that, there is limited range in actual shops here...

sorry for repeated bumps, but i do want more opinions/suggestions...

would it help if i said anything about what music i would play or what amp i might buy or anything like that?

come to that, any suggestions on the amp? i'm thinking kustom or marshall in the 15-30w range.

Yes.

what type of music do you play?
is there a certain style or look you prefer?
is a whammy bar a must have or is a stop tail bridge fine?
is weight a factor?
do you have relatively small or large hands or pretty normal?

When I went to Guitar Center, I saw the Ibanez GSA60 look just like the Schecter Omen 6.
Anyway, they look stunning, definitely get it.

Also, don't cheap out on the Amp, you will just end up trying to sell a POS amp and get something better later on.

Go with the Ibanez RG 500 series. You should be able to pick up a used one cheap. I have a RG 570 and a JS1000 and they rock. At the end of the year, it's a sparkle blue JEM77 for me.

Don't automatically rule out dual humbuckers in favor of a humbucker 2-single coil pickup combo. Many dual humbucker setups are wired with a single coil position on the toggle switch. My Ibanez SZ720FM has dual humbuckers but the middle position on the switch turns off a coil on each humbucker giving you a pair of single coils. If you are looking in the $400 USD range and a whammy isn't something you want look at the Ibanez SZs. there are several versions. SZ320 in solid mahogany natural finish or a painted black version that has a maple top in the $400 USD range here in the states. All the SZs are solid mahogany bodies and set necks rather than bolt on. Hardware wise all the SZs are identical as well. The only differences between 320s, 520s, and 720s, are primarily aesthetics like the maple tops, 520 quilted maple, 720 flamed maple with abalone binding on the body and detailed flame inlays on the fretboard.

well...
i would play stuff like radiohead, interpol, strokes, white stripes, franz ferdinand, etc., but would probably also try out some music i don't listen to so much, especially older music that lots of people recognise ('classic' rock i guess) and i feel like i might want to play some blues or something, no idea why. it's not essential, i don't need one of the big hollow jazz/country semiacoustics.

i quite like both the fender/strat style look and the les paul look, and other variants like sg style. i'm not a huge fan of flying v style or weird bc rich 'metal' style, but noone has recommended them anyway.
a whammy bar isn't essential, but i guess it's another feature. don't the single locking ones detune it anyway (you can't get double locking at this price...)
weight isn't really a factor, i would maybe reconsider if i started gigging with it but i wouldn't have thought i'll be playing it standing THAT much anyway, and the weight of the les pauls didn't bother me when i tried one (not sure exactly which though, probably a cheap(er) epiphone)
i don't have huge hands, but they're not that small either. my hand size never causes me a problem on acoustics or any guitar i've ever tried.

With your choice of music and your price range i would suggest mexican strat or tele....but im sure any guitar would do....i know someone who use to own a squire and he said the action is very low compared to fender strat

I think a Telecaster would be a good choice. It's a popular classic rock and blues guitar and a lot of modern bands including Radiohead and Franz Ferdinand use them. Thom Yorke and Alex Kopranos both play double-humbucker Teles and there's a Squier Custom that sells for $200 US. Here's a product page: link. Also there's a P-90 version that comes in blonde: link

Put the extra money in the amp. A decent amp will make a cheap guitar sound good but not vice versa.
