I want to buy my gf one for Christmas and I figure I should probably buy it really soon. Anyways just wondering what companies to look at for a start. I'm pretty much just looking for a light, compact, point and shoot camera.

Any further suggestion of exact model types would be awesome.

I'm probably looking to spend no more than $400 but expecting to spend around $300.

I am seriously considering it. It's a good price and all the reviews I've read have been positive.

I know SD600 is the "safe-bet" choice people will go with here.
But lately my gf's cousin got a Sony W50, and we compared it with my gf's SD600, and the W50 blows the socks off the SD600. The Sony is much sharper, better contrast, colors, and has better build quality too. Just looking at the lens coating just makes it a no brainer why the Sony's Zeiss lens would have better contrast. The reflection off the W50 is deep and minimal, while the canon had a clear reflection in comparison. This results in soft, washed out images, which you must admit, is a trademark of the SD series.
I thought the SD600 was an awesome little camera when I used it with my gf. Great skintones, nice out of the camera pictures, but after seeing the Sony W50, it's just no comparison.
The Fuji F30 is also supposed to be a winner, but I haven't had the chance to use it yet, so I cannot speak for it.
But the Sony W50 is a safe bet above the Canon SD600.

Imaging Resource FTW  Best in-depth reviews I've come across, with a *very* standardized means of attaining these results (compare a few reviews to see what I mean). Check out "Dave's Picks" to save yourself time.

FWIW, the SD600 is currently on the "Picks" list.

check the link in my sig
It's the dpreview.com buying guide. You can specify the things you want (like price range, megapixels, screen size ...) and it'll show you all the available cameras.

Gee, I wonder how many of these canon people actually look at other brands objectively.

I second this recommendation. It's a great resource, and DPReview is one website that I can count on.

EDIT: I recommend the Fujifilm F30. Quality-wise, it knocks the socks off basically every other P&S. For an example, see here: ISO 800 of the F30 versus the SD 700 IS (which is one of the more expensive and better P&S cameras).

Anything but Kodak and HP.

Another vote for Canon PowerShot SD600, Dell had it on sale for $171 with free shipping.

If she does alot of inside shooting, then get her a fuji f20.
http://www.amazon.com/Fujifilm-Finepix-...-2238754-8620411?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

If she does alot of outside shooting, get her a canon a630 or 640 if you are feeling spendy.

Want a smaller canon? Has image stabilization and 6x zoom as well.

A nice panasonic, if you don't mind noisy low light shots, if you don't mind that check out the fz7 (not pocketable - but a good price)

Here is a little nikon p&s that people seem to enjoy
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Coolpix-L6-...-2238754-8620411?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

Here is an excellent Sony offering btw:

Kodak cameras are fine contrary to popular opinion, here is their best pocketable one
http://www.amazon.com/Kodak-EasyShare-D...-2238754-8620411?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

The best pocketable Olympus offering right now seems to be:

Finally a nice casio offering is here:

Why not a Kodak?

I voted Kodak as I just got a C875. Its 8mp, 5x optical zoom, and can be had for less then $220.

C875 specs...

Kodaks are infamous for quality issues and they arn't any cheaper. Staying away from Kodak becuase you can get a equally priced Canon/Nikon without those issues.

Yes I do, but what is the point?

The point is after doing some research you can find better cameras instead of just jumping into the canon bandwagon

Meh, you might be able to find a better camera. Here are the facts:

The Canon is not a bad camera, just maybe not the best in PQ
The Canon is "in"/"cute" which is the factor for most girls picking out a camera
Canon media is the cheapest
While Canon picture quality may not be the best, but their build quality is at the top
