Budget is about 15K max if I am goin to purchase this soley for myself (my parents would help me with downpayment/initial stuff while i pay them back), otherwise, I am trying to convince my 'rents into getting a fullsize truck, which i'd be partly paying for. A truck would be more pratical in replacing the family minivan from '91, a toyota previa. My zip code is 95336 if you have anyother suggestions/local/new car incentives/deals.

1998 Civic EX coupe, 5spd manual, 64k miles, ~$7500 (i persnally know the owner, i'm good with hondas as far as maintenence and repair)
2000 BMW 323i, 5spd manual, 94k miles, ~$14,995 (a lot of miles i know, but i'd be doing the maintenence/repair)
New 2005 Kia Spectra5, 5spd man, with abs/sunroof, ~ $14,500
New 2005 Subaru Imprezza 2.5RS, 5spd manual, ~$18,300
New Mazda3, 5spd man, hatch or sedan, ~$19,500
New Ford Focus hatch, 5spd man, ~$15,800
2005 Ford Mustang convertible, V6, ~$ 26,500 (about a $1500 markup right now)

Now, for trucks:
'05 Ford F-250 CrewCab, 4x4 Lariat diesel ~$39k
'05 F-150 CrewCab, 4x4 Lariat, ~$32,200
'05 Dodge 3500 Diesel CrewCab ~$38,300
'05 Dodge 1500 HEMI, 4x4 CrewCab, ~$30,100
'05 Toyota Tundra, 4x4 CrewCab ~$32k
'05 Tacoma 4x4 CrewCab longbed, ~$30k (can almost get a tundra for this much)
'05 Nissan Titan, 4x4 CrewCab, ~$35,300
'05 Nissan Frontier, 4x4 nismo CrewCab, ~$27,700
'05 Honda Ridgeline, ~$35k (!!! wow, might as well get a full size diesel, heheh)
'05 Jeep Unlimited, ~$26,200

comments/suggestions welcome. I am kind of leaning towards my friends' civic, b/c i know that i could pay that off rather quickly.

Edit: added poll. A little clarification: if I were to get a car, the car would be primarily for me, i'd be making full payments on it, with just the help of my parents in putting down the initial amount so i could pay them back. If i were to get a truck, it'd be repalcing the minivan, so my parents would be paying for some of it as it wouldn't soley be for me.

hmmm...i would think that y'all would have some suggestions by now. maybe i have my budget set too high. Right now, i have little saved up, prob about $3k all said and done. But, a car isn't the most important thing right now i suppose, but it'd sure be nice to replace the van with something that gets better gas milage, and is safer via airbags/advances in crumple zone technology.

with a 15k budget, buy a new lx civic for a couple grand more. you get the warranty and a new car. you might wanna check the insurance rates and then come back to us. i was surprised at how high the insurance for a civic was (and you have a bimmer on the list too).

oh, and poll

well........................................

you kinda throw out all diffferent types of cars/trucks, new used and.at all different price ranges

maybe narrow it down a little, and decide what type and how much you really want to spend

The convertible mustangs really going for that much of a premium in cali? Thats over sticker price?...cause where I am, its not even worth it for me to flip them on resale even when I can get them below invoice.

Anyhow, going from a mid-engined. 2.4 supercharged minivan :)....to a full size truck?? Interesting.

I like the ridgeline and mazda 3. And you posted all sticker prices. actual sales prices are much lower.

Check it out on http://www.carsdirect.com Right now its below invoice because of $500 customer rebate. This is the base 2.5RS model, stickshift, with minimal options, just the air filtration (in cabin filter) comes out to $17,666.

I quoted the approx prices I got from carsdirect.com with options. All the trucks are auto, 4x4, and crewcab. Most of the cars, if not all, are manual transmission, with minimal options.

Most are below MSRP with the exception of the Mustang conv, carsdirect says about $1,500 over msrp, but I haven't checked local dealers yet.

05 accord VP invoices 16K.

Pickups in general cost too much considering they are work mules/beaters.

I'm sorta leaning towards the imprezza 2.5RS; its new, it has warranty, reliable. On the other hand, the 98 civic of my friend's is inexpensive, reliable and I know honda's pretty well; i could do a lot of the maintenence/repair/timing belt if need be. This is if I were to get a car.

If it were a truck, perhaps the F-150, b/c its gonna be hard to convinve my mother that a F-250 diesel is really needed (to 'replace' the minivan)

For the price of that Mustang you can get a really nice slightly used G35 sedan that will be classier, sexier, more practical, and faster.

don't get a diesel pickup unless you need it for heavy towing/hauling

do you really need a pickup truck period?

what do you really need? a commutor car?

get the used honda and spend the big dollars on your next car/truck down the road

Obvious choice:
05 Dodge 3500 Diesel CrewCab ~$38,300

(why is that even in this poll?)

Well it doesn't seem a good idea to try and replace the function of the minivan with a honda civic. It a '91 toyota previa; its old and yeah, it has its share of problems (which i fix)....that's why i'd want a truck, to 'replace' the van, in addition to other things, like, i could get a [used] bass/fishing boat now that i'd have a truck to pull it.

ya I know your young and don't want to be seen in a grandpa car

best used cars

Our elders know a good thing when they see it.

While i dont mind having a bigger car (I drive my father's 98 A6 quite a bit, and it's not 'too' big to drive by any means), like a grand marquis/crown vic, i'd rather have a smaller car if i were to get a car.

while on the subject of cars, what would be a good 5000 dollar purchase?

in a car I'd like a big full-size sedan, Crown Vic, Towncar, the like.

in a truck I'd like something reliable, back seats isn't a must but I'd like em.

what kinds of vehicles should I be looking at?

well, you can't have everything

but a grand marquis has a little mini van, truck, luxury car mixed into it

V8 rear wheel drive, is were it's at

gas mileage 18 city 25 highway
safe
cheap to insure
roomy, quiet
solid, comfee
back seat for haullin /doing chicks and shopping
my 9 foot one piece fishing poles fit inside
cheap to fix and maintane
tuff and durable, easy to work on
very reliable
no timing belts to worry about

hey for 10 grand you can get a nice one with leather seats, full power, abs, traction control

Our elders know a good thing when they see it.

want one with muscle and sport

This is the most convoluted, and nonsensical YACT ever made.

First you say you want something around 15 grand, and then you put up Diesel trucks that cost nearly 40k$ up as options. So which is it??

Honestly, if your debating between this many cars/trucks, you have some serious issues. Maybe you should try driving all of them, and not just posting on this forum to see what others think. There are entirely too many variables that relate to your life, lifestyle, insurance, so on and so on and so on.

lord for 5 grand you can get a nice crown vic or grand marquis in the 94 to 98 years

don't get a pre 94

94 was a great year, 95 was good too

weakness: lock up torque convertor in 94 to 98 years, but changing tranny fliud often takes care of it, there is a drain plug in the convertor making it easy. 99 and newer no problem

96 to 98 once in a while a intake manifold will crack, 94 or 95 and 99 or newer don't have this problem
