Rip, I had a RX-7 too. FANTASTIC car, loved it. Handled like it was on frickin rails.
Either way, the SVT Cobra will absolutely trounce any car yet listed in this thread. And from my viewpoint, I want a chic that prefers good ole Detroit Iron to some Instant Rice burner. ;)
Hence, I stick by my guns.
03 Cobra

I bought one of those rx-7's for $200. It was a beat up old junker, I learned to drive stick in it. Turned around and sold it for $200 after I was done hehe

Mine was a slushbox. Absolutely bulletproof tranny. Many a 5k neutral drop in that thing. Never did nuetral drop from over 3k on pavement, but you wind'r up to 5k and drop it in first on gravel and it'd just dig trenches. Damn that was a fun car.... I really miss it.... Rolled mine 5 times, totalled it good. :(

Heres a sweet one but I'll bet my dining room table its been driven like a banshee.

the first one is AT, the horror!
the second one has the japanese front end, nice! I would never buy a modified car though, 1) you never know who did the work and 2) you know the driver drove it

Definitely take the RX8 and 350Z for a drive. A G35 is prolly a better car than the 350Z but I didn't like the 350 personally.

Honestly the Evo8 is outside of the price range with decent options not to mention it can and will dominate any other new car's performance #s in that price range. The STi and Cobra are significantly outside of the price range. Besides, a Cobra cannot keep up with an Evo8 around a track and neither can the STi. The Honda S2000 is also over 30k... and it's a convertible. Would SUCK in the winter and convertibles should not be daily drivers... same reason why the used Boxster idea should be canned.

Another new car to consider (even though I am a Honda hater) is the Acura TSX. It does offer very good luxury value for your money and it's slightly sporty. Or if you're a VW fan, you could try to get your hands on a R32 Golf.

Another better used option IMHO if you want speed and luxury is a nice used 2000+ Audi S4. Otherwise, I stand by a pick for the Mazda RX8.

EDIT: GTO? Too much... but it'd be my pick after the Evo.

That's a given, but money aside:

I have to say that if you take the rx8 out for a drive and then the 350z or g35c you'll be hard pressed to buy the rx8. It's a very nice car, don't get me wrong, but it's a family-man sports car. It seats 4 comfortably. And with that comfort you sacrifice power - a lot of it. The G35 will summarily trounce it on the highway, as will the 350z. The 350 is nice, but the G35 is infinitely (har har) more class.

Believe it or not I had a RX-7 in my younger days.

Me and my RX-7

Of course, I bought it used for a song.

I drove it for 2 yrs before it was stolen from my driveway.
Ah that sucks, but at least you had fun for a bit. I've still not satisfied the inate desire in myself for a sports car. I will some day...some day..IT SHALL BE MINE!
can't... there are no manual enthusiast left in the region I'm in. Well there's 4 left, and they're all white. Been to 3 different dealers, they all said the samething.
Thank God your name is more than just a name. Anybody buying a 350z in manual should be euthanized.

Come to alabama and you can pick up some white trash

Those last gen rx7s are a bit of a maintenance nightmare I hear. You want the Nissan v6 baby!

Good ideas overall, but I take issue with your recommendation of a fowly overpriced 240 horsepower brick - er, I mean the R32 golf.

The S series Audis are enough to bring a man to tears from the joy of them, but if their reliability is anything like the rest of the audi seris, you want to steer clear!

Actually the last 2 years of the S4 solved most of the hose problems of the earlier years. Hard to find one for under $30k though, in fact almost impossible.

Say what?

What kind of track are we talking about here? I was under the impression that the STi beat the Evo in almost every benchmark, albeit only slightly.

then your choices are the same as mine, 350z or RX-8. G35 if you got the money and want a nice GT.

The G35 I just built on the website is only 4k more than the RX-8 I've been looking at. Is it worth it? I'll head to the dealership tomorrow to check it out but I assume most people would think it is worth it.

Yeah, the Audi reliablity (because of VW) has always been an issue but I know quite 3 people that have happily owned them for a few years without incident. Still, if I weren't willing to break stuff and get it fixed, I wouldn't get an Audi. You can find a nice S4 (not anything newer than 2001) for around 20k.

And I did qualify the R32 with "VW fan"... considering I'm not. The R32 can go park it's fat overpriced @$$ somewhere else.

Oh and if you've read that the performance #s on the STi are better... yes, in many cases they are... but you put a decent driver behind the wheel and everyone is generally able to run a course faster or at least even in the Evo. Flat out better handling, better brakes, different and more tractable power delivery for tracks. On the drag strip the Evo loses out... but that's nothing a $20 boost controller can't change.

Personally, if I was looking at new entry luxury... I'd take the IS300 over the TSX anyday.

I'm curious as to how a Chrysler 300 Hemi would price out...

Drive it... the Z platform Nissans are good cars no doubt... but I just didn't like the harshness of the driving sensations. The RX8 felt light and playful... the 350Z felt brutish and tiring, supposedly the Gs are a tad less brutish, but if the vehicle dynamics are similar you may want to think twice after a spirited test drive.

What you should do with gas prices through the roof is get an Echo or if you want to spend more be high tech and cleaner a Prius. Toyota loses approximately 10k everyone they sell.

The Z IS brutish; in fact, very much so. I think I have had at least 10 compression fractures from driving around on city streets. I drove 10 hours over 1.5 days this week, and the experience was bloody miserable.

Anyway, the Z is a great car, but it's NOT a traveler's car.

Hehe if I can afford 30k for a car I don't think $1.60 a gallon is a big deal.
