I have a 1974 Dodge Pickuptruck with a 318 5.2L V8. I just put on a new Holley Carburator. Well my new carburator has no vacuum advance on the carburator, so I hooked it up to the intake's main vacuum tree thing. Well, w/o the vacuum advance, I am timed at TDC. With teh advance on AT IDLE, I am at TWENTY THREE (23) degrees advanced. And that is idle. Do you guys think that is waaaay too much? Think there is another vacuum source I could try?

Wish I could help you. I think I recall in the dim recesses of my brain that my old 65 Dodge Polara 383 took the vacuum advance right off the base of the carb.

I would say that is way to much but there is only one way to find out give it the beans and if it pings that is too much if it dies it is not enough.. that is what I have done in the past..

I am getting minor backfire (truck hasn't been taken on the road) during idle, and it runs fine at power. What happens if I just plug the Vacuum advance?

Plugging the vacuum unit is your best bet, but that should just be a band-aid until you either tap your carb for a vacuum port, or get a centrifugal dizzy. I don't know where you're hooking up the vacuum now, but if it's not hooked up to the carb, it's in the wrong place. That sounds like WAY too much advance at idle.

The vac hooked to the manifold is advancing the dist too much. Pull it off and plug the manifold.

As Yokomo said, advance it till it pings, then back it off a little, or run high test.

Do as cj says.

There are no vacuum ports on the carburetor?

your truck will run like sh1t unless you get the vacuum advance connected properly. With it connected to the manifo;d, you are running full advance right from idle. it needs to be progessive.
