Cool, inquiries don't hurt unless you do too many. If you haven't had any hard inq's in the past 6 months, then don't worry about putting 1 or 2 on there. But after that, it starts to look bad.

And you want to buy a used Japanese car with an automatic ?

Hahahahahahahahhaha

Kidding aside, I wish you the best of luck on that one.

*showroom-quality shift from original 1993 Honda AT*

And the problem with used Japanese automatics is ... ?

If its a newer honda (96+), you supposed to only use fluid form the manufacturer (either Honda ATF or ATF Z1), which the dealer can charge quite a bit for unless you buy in quantity (even then, most honda trannies only take about 2.7qts). The 95 and below hondas can use Dexron III, even though they call for Dexron IIE or Honda ATF (Honda ATF wasn't exactly spec'd untill 95 however). Dexron IIE is no longer made. Toyota calls for Toyota Type IV in most of their newer autos now, bt spec'd Dexron IIE in their older models. I'm not so sure of other car makes, but it seems like every japanese auto tranny nowadays calls for their own specific fluid. Used japanese auto trannies are fine IMO, but, more often than not, most people probably negelected to service the tranny fluid at all. Their is no such thing as a "lifetime" transmission fluid; sure, the fluid will last the lifetime of the transmission, not the car.

Why car manufacturers can't just agree on one fluid, namely Dexron III, which is probably the most often used fluid, is beyond me. Pretty soon your gonna have to use Honda brand gasoline.

I haven't read any of the other replies in this thread, but I will say that my '97 Nissan Maxima has never been to the shop except for its 60k mile checkup and some body work after my father hit a deer.

~93k miles on the odometer now and still going strong (knock on wood).

Edit: Also I don't know if 97 maximas even come with a V4 as an option, but mine is a V6. Highly recommended, as it has saved my ass on the interstate quite a few times.

So what about regular maintenence like oil changes, transmission fluid changes, radiator coolant, brake fluid change, spark plugs, brake pads, etc? (if you do this all yourself, then kudos to you. not too many people do all their own maintenence) Nissans, imo, have been shown to be a good car; all my friends who have nissans have over 130k on the odo and their cars are still going strong. With 93k miles, you may want to look into getting new shocks.

Well I applied at eloan in a joint application with my fiance. We got denied by them, which I can't say i didn't expect, since we both have limited credit histories, though both have FICO's of 700+. SO I then went to Eloan and again filed jointly with my fiance, I was kinda hoping I could manage to get the loan myself, since i don't like asking my family to cosign my loans, even though I know they will do it. Anyways, i got an email this morning saying I was approved and to call them. So I called and it turns out they approved me for 18,000(which I will probablly only use about half of) over 48 months, only thing is, its at a rate of 5.75%. A bit higher then the 4.49 they advertise, but hey I got approved and really with the amount I am talking about the rate only makes it an extra 4 bucks a month, granted thats almost 200.00 bucks extra over the loan, but I can handle that.

Now the check should be here tomorrow, I think. I have been looking in the papers and autotrader a lot lately. There doesn't seem to be much in my local papers, but I found this on autotrader. Its a couple hours away, but I may go check it out. Low mileage, '97 Nissan Maxima SE, black on black leather, the dealer said they serviced it and put new tires on, he also said it had a small ding on the back somewhere, but said it was the kind he could pop out without having to do major work or paint on it. I will give him a call again today and see if they happen to have any service records on it. I also need to get a carfax on it and find a place in Chagrin Falls to get it inspected, one person told me to check through AAA and take it to one of thier places for inspection, is this okay, or should I take it to someplace else like midas or firestone or whatever?

With having a coborrower, the car will have to be titled in both of our names. So who has to deal with the plates and stickers and all that good stuff.

Can someone help me decipher this report, its is kinda confusing. ACcording to what i can undertand the car was manufactured in April of 97, then it looks as if it was originally purchased in Newyork in late May of 97, with the title being issued early July. Then after a little more then 22,000 miles the vehicle was sold at auction and then a month later purchased in PA, then at 55,000 miles a new title was issued in Ohio. Does this just mean the owner moved to Ohio and had to get a new title, or did the vehicle change ownership? That happened in May of 01 with 55,000 miles, then the next listing is a passed emissions inspection in November of 02 with only 60,000 miles on it, how the heck did they only put 5,000 miles on it in a year and a half? It was involved in a minor accident in May of 03. Then it says in January of 04 with 66,000 miles on it a new owner was reported, then a couple weeks later it was sold at auction then i assume the dealer who has it now bought it. He said he just got it a few days ago, so thats probablly why its not listed yet.

SO now what does that all mean. It looks like it was owned for about 2 years in New York with 22,000 miles put on it. Then sold at auction and purchased in Pennsylvania. It then had about 33,000 miles put on it in about 20 months, so some pretty heavy use. Then in April of 01 with about 55,000 miles on it was issued a new title in Ohio. Then a year and 6-7 months go by and the next listing is for it passing emissions inspection with only 60,000 miles on it. I just don't see you can only put 5,000 miles on a car in a year and a half. Unless maybe the parents in PA titles the car to thier child in order to use to go to school in OH and he just didn't use it much, but I don't know. Then it got in the accident in May of 03. Then in january of 04 a new title was issued a new owner reported and it was registered as a lease vehicle, but then less then a month later it was sold at auction, and then I think purchased by the dealer who currentlly has it.

Sorry for the repeating, I am just trying to understand this. If you can offer any other insight, please do. Would you buy this car? BTW, the dealer who currentlly owns it mentioned to me that it had a small dent on the back of the car somewhere that they were able to pop out without repaiting or any major work, I am not sure if this was fromt he accident, but it definately could be.
