I'm sure most of you have seen the several threads I have had about used cars lately. Hopefully this will be my last one. First I should say I have not yet figured out my budget. I know that?s the first thing you should do and I will definitely have it before I start actually shopping for cars. Right now I figure my maximum budget is about 7,000.00, that?s on the high end though. I would much prefer to spend closer to 5000.00.

Well after having another domestic break on me (not really the cars fault, more the mechanics fault that worked on it, and its being fixed for free) I have finally seen the light and decided to look more closely at the foreign auto makers.

What I am looking for in a car:
Auto tranny is preferable-I know the most of you would want a manual, but if my fiancé has to drive the car I just don't want her having another thing to concentrate on while driving, not that she is a bad driver, just would prefer all she has to do is drive the car. I realize the manual is more fun, but I will live without it.

I have been considering, but not limited to Nissan, Honda, Toyota, Acura and the likes.

I have no preference on number of doors. 2 usually look nicer, but 4 are more economical for a family.

Something that won't costs insane amounts for insurance. I will be financing and will have to get full coverage and that has to stay within my monthly budget. I was considering an Integra and still am, but hear these are expensive to insure.

Looks are somewhat important to me, I don't want a rice mobile, nor do I want a theft magnet. I basically just want a nice looking car not something that?s just plain vanilla. Alloys are nice, I am thinking I would be most happy with a black car (until it gets dirty, LOL). I usually like a simple spoiler on most cars, but if it has a nice line without it that?s fine too. Basically in between rice/bling and vanilla.

Economical is good, good gas mileage, not to expensive to fix/maintain.

Fun to drive would be nice, but if that requires a big engine which will cost me more in insurance then forget it. As long as it has more then enough to get me around town and maneuver in and out of traffic at 65+ on the freeways.

I think I would prefer front wheel drive, since we get a lot of snow and ice in Ohio. I won't be racing this car, so RWD and a huge engine isn't that important to me.

Interior should be of nice quality and functional, leather would be nice since I have the kids, its easier to clean, and nicer feel.

Can't really think of anything else although I am sure I am leaving out some stuff, maybe it will come to me later or after you start responding.

Cars I have been considering/looking at are:mainly mid 90's
Nissan 200SX SE-R/maybe even consider the SE version
Nissan Sentra SE, but these are late 90's and maybe out of my price range.
Nissan Altima
Nissan Maxima-great engine, but prolly more power then I need and what do they cost to insure?
Acura Integra
Haven't really been looking at Hondas since they all seem plain or riced, but maybe if I saw some nice looking ones I would change my mind.
Same thing for the Toyotas really, it seems like these tend to be more refined with less flash. But again I haven't looked at them very hard.
Mazda's-looked at a few, MX6, protégé, my ideal car right now would a Mazda6 hatchback, but they are not out quite yet, I also like the Mazda3 sedan, but with decent options these are way out of my price range.

Again I am sure there are others I am forgetting, but I figured I would tap into the ATOT user?s car knowledge. I feel confident that you guys can recommend cars I never even though of, but who knows. Plus you all just know more about them and which are good and which are bad. Any help you can give me is appreciated. Thanks.

"Nissan Maxima-great engine, but prolly more power then I need and what do they cost to insure?"

same as every other 4 door sedan on the market

You can teach her to drive a manual. They are in most cases:

- cheaper up front cost
- less maintenance
- less repairs
- faster
- better on gas

Why do you say that, alot of compact to midsized sedans have smaller engines.

Hey man if you can find me a Decent prelude in my budget I will consider it. But I'm not holding my breath

What happens if after 200 threads and 100 hours later you FINALLY FIND A CAR then apply for a used car loan and get declined?

I hear ya on all that Skoorb, it would take me a little while to get used to it too. I have actually only driven a standard a couple times and not in the past few years. ANd its not really teaching her how to drive one that bothers me. I think she would pick it up fairly quickly except for hills, she would freak if someone was right behind her on an uphill incline where she is stopped and then has to go. But she would get over that when she learns. I guess I can consider standard tranny cars, but I just think it would be easier to have an auto

Honda Accord... decent size, 2 or 4 doors, good gas mileage, not too expensive, reliable, and I wouldnt think its much to insure.

Well I have a FICO of 700 which will go up a bit after I get my income tax refund and pay off the credit cards. But if I get declinded I can alsways get one of my parents to cosign.

Rossman are you saying I should get preapproved now? I was planning on doing that a few days ago, but preapproval usually only last like 60 days or so, what happens after that time if I haven't used the loan, are there any fees or anything, or can I just reapply later when I find a car. If thats the case thenthe next thing i will do is get preapproved.

Definitely look at used Proteges, like an '01 ES. The resale on them was already bad, and it's probably going to get even worse with the release of the 3.

It's a small car and it's a bit loud inside, but it's cheap, nice-looking, pretty reliable, fun to drive (kind of slow but very good handling), excellent gas mileage, cheap insurance, etc.

Didn't find many '01 protege's witin 300 miles for under 7,000.00. There were a couple, one was gold, and it was ugly, the other had over 100,000 and they were asking 7,000.00 for it.

Hmm, you're right, just checked out Edmunds and I was underestimating the prices. Still, even a '99 or '00 is a good value, but they had even weaker engines.

The current generation Mazda Protege's should be very reliable, does anyone know when the current gen was introduced?

The hatchback started in '02 and ended in '03. IMHO they look tons better than the sedans :) Those are probably out of the pricerange though, 10-12k if I recall from when I was looking at them in Dec.

I am not sure when the current design of the sedan came in, www.edmunds.com will know for sure!

Why does everyone say that the integras are high to insure. I thought it was because it was a popular car for thieves. But it seems like I see the accord on the top of the thieves list too.

ALso I see a lot of you mentioning the accord, any reason you are picking it over the altima? Just wondering.

I really need to call my insurance company to see what it would cost to insure a mid 90's maxima. There are 2 listed in the paper with low miles and around my price range. I don't really need anything that big, but at the price with under 100,000 on them its hard to pass up.
