YACT: Subaru Legacy vs. Honda Civic Si

I've pretty much narrowed my car choices down to:

Subaru Legacy 2.5i
OR
Honda Civic Si

Both cars are really appealing to me because both come in manual and have heard both are very fun to drive. One thing that is really taunting me to buy the Civic Si is how nice it looks on paper and in person. But then again, I'm in the Chicago/Milwaukee Area and that AWD on the Legacy will be extremely helpfully. Argh, choices, choices, choices.

The new Civic Si is among one of my choices for a new car to be purchased soon. Im test driving one in the nest week or so. Like I said, I havent driven it yet, but what I like is the looks, the interior, the 8000 rpm redline, and the exhuast note.

heh....exactly what my thoughts were. Civic si == poop on a stick. I'm not a fan of subie styling but they are good cars.

 I didn't think the 2.5i was a turbo?

You're right

Corrected, but it still seems like very different classes of vehicle. One is a small, two-door, zingy little FWD boyracer. The other is a practical midsized sedan with AWD that still hauls reasonable quantities of ass.

That said, 2.5GT FTW? :D

Obviously we're not thinking anything near the same. Si is a great car for its class, which the Legacy is not a member of.

Also, I prefer the more subdued Legacy styling to the "WTF happened to your face?" WRX. :p

Legacy, hands down. If you're going to be in a Hawn-duh, make it a motorcycle. The cars are for teenagers and college gearheads. Subaru's are for adults.

Because it's not cool to get >40mpg once you're an "Adult"?

Find an 05 or 06 Legacy GT Limited.

You don't see a lot up here.
Everyone thinks mine's an Acura for some reason. :p

There are way too many people with Civics around here. There are at least 5 in my 30 space condo parking alone. Though that could be somewhat because of where I live...

I've owned a Subaru and it was a great car. I would test drive them both and whichever one I liked best is the one I would go with. I doubt you can go wrong either way.

Naah. That wasn't really my angle - and I apologize if it came off that harsh. It's not a cosmetics or a culture thing.. it's more the fact that around here you can't stand still for a few minutes without counting a Civic from pretty much every color in their lineup - but a Legacy or WRX is pretty damn rare.

To me, there are tons of qualities that I look for in a vehicle. Sometimes outside cosmetics, sometimes comfort, build quality, and luxury. I find the biggest satisfaction from having a rather unique car - call me a generation Y attention-seeker, but the fact is when someone does a genuine double-take to see what I'm driving rather than thinking, "Oh, another Civic/Focus/Cobalt/whathaveyou" I get the most satisfaction from that.

On that note, something like an Acura or a Legacy would be far more ideal to me. I would quite simply not purchase a Civic - and if given one I would most likely sell it immediately and buy something else. It's simply my preference and opinion, and I'm not saying there is anything wrong if you disagree or have your own.

Attention whore. ;) :D

Nothing wrong with that. I got a Canadian-only trim level ... gets enough attention when I take it stateside, and I've had a guy in a Vette ask me where he could get the colour. :p

Agreed :beer::D

And I'd love to tune up a Legacy GT into a stupidly fast sleeper vehicle. "Your 350Z just got smoked by a family of four and a dog." :D

Haha, yeah. We own a 05 Canyon, and an 07 Legacy GT. I've always had a way with salesmen, and I did some IT work for the Omaha Auto Auction a few years back which still has me in very good standing with people of authority in that business - so when I go looking for something specific I tend to get it for a very good price.

The Canyon is my preferred choice, regardless of it's flaws. If I were to actually need to do hauling I would have upshifted to a Sierra, but the fact is I need to do very light hauling/towing and have a big enough bed to load up a motorcycle or ATV for inner-city transport. All of this and the ability to actually park without involving logistical mathematical algorithms makes the Canyon a great truck and perfect for what I need.

When the woman wanted to upgrade from her 05 Altima, I kept trying to convince her to try a Speed Six or TSX.. the reality of that was that I was trying to make her buy something I liked so I could speed around in something when I didn't need the truck, heh. She was dead-set on a Legacy and has always had a desire for one but couldn't afford it - however with her Masters in hand and a solid job as a Geotech Engineer financial concerns weren't really even a factor anymore in vehicle purchases (saving for a house ASAP were, however, so no M6, which made me a sad panda =/ )

So, I did what I do best, and went and toyed with a few Legacy's and STI's.. can't believe how fun these cars are! For a sedan the 2.5 turbo Legacy is just downright QUICK, and is so low to the ground that you simply hug the road straight through the gears.

Needless to say, I will be doing some heavy modifications of the Legacy in my space time - she just thinks it's her toy. =P

Obligatory vote for the Subaru :D

Even though your choices are in two completely different classes, and aren't really directly comparable to each other.

Not only the color, you bastards still get a legacy gt wagon in manual. Even though its still made here in the US, they won't sell it...

Damn you Subaru of America!

between a 2.5i and a civic --- honestly - i'd probably choose the civic for cost and gas mileage. that being said - the turbocharged legacys kick ass.
