YACT: Stick Shift Drivers

I dunno...I don't even look at the tach anymore and go more by the sound. I usually shift around 2200 - 2500 RPM for normal driving - and anywhere from 4000 to 5000+ for 'spirited' driving.

It really depends on the car😉

Yeah, in a torquey V8.... I wouldn't try that in a lowend I4, unless you like stalling.

1500 to 2000rpms, typically.

I'm usually within this range too (usually closer to 2k than 1.5k). How much, in terms of clutch life, is this knocking off?

being able to get your car moving at idle does not a "real driver" make you.

go back to the parking lot and practice some more...mmm'kay?

oh, and get some torque while you're at it.

Do you mean that you rev to 2k as you let out the clutch?

:Q

Edit: Every time? .......

Thats about where you want to be in the first place, so its kind of a silly question.

Usually drops below 2k again before I fully let out the clutch.

OK, my point is: it's a subtle combination of steady clutch release and throttle pressure at the same time.

You don't rev it to 2000 and then let out the clutch.

I even spent an afternoon at a Skip Barber Racing School. Although it was sponsored by my car dealership and we raced 4 cyl Neon's with automatics 😱

You should have seen the front tires on those things. Scary 😀

91' CRX demands above 1000, otherwise it starts bucking back and forth like none other

/new clutch
//doesn't matter

I understand.

I've been meaning to make a video for ATOT on how to drive a manual transmission. What's the best way to do this? Mounting the camera is probably my first obstacle, compressing it would be the second, following by actually hosting it.

never had torque, eh? gotta rev that moter don't ya?

I suppose not? Trying to launch at anything less than 1500rpm in my car is a pretty bad idea.

I suppose it would all matter on the engine your working with, but launching between 1500-2000 is the sweet spot for my car.

depends on the car... I don't really look at my tach when I'm just starting to go, I go by feel. My car idles at 800rpm and I give it just a little bit of gas, so maybe 1000-1200 rpm, and I shift around 2500-3000rpm depending on how much of a hurry I'm in.

Unless you want to drill through your rear deck or suspend it on your seats, I'd suggest the old-fashioned backseat cameraman approach. I'd offer to help, but I'm a bit far away. 😛

Compressing = no big deal.

Hosting, I'm sure you can find someone or a torrent. 🙂

Probably not much at all. I haven't haven't had any clutch problems in either of the two manual cars I have owned...

I've seen people express shock that you'd have to rev "that high"... but on a 4 cylinder car, there's no low end torque. Besides, its not like you rev to 2k, then drop the clutch, its a gradual increase of the throttle and depressing of the clutch. Once the car is in gear, I'll be sitting at 1500-2000.
