YACT: so I'm getting a sub-$25k "racey" car ...

Looks like I'm gonna end up going stick after all. And I can't help but fall for the looks and features of the blue 03 RSX Type-S. Anyone wanna tell me what's good/bad about this car that I don't know? I've read a few articles and it seems pretty nice. What's the "performance package" that Edmunds talks about that can be had with the Type-S? I wasn't able to find out anything about it, what's included or how much it costs and if it would be cheaper to get the parts and do it yourself. 200hp is nice but 142lb-ft seems kinda low. What about the noise?

*edit* Added WRX ... musta missed it earlier.

BTW Nissan Z350 is not an option since it's $30k and first year model which I don't want for a new car. Ditto for S2000, Audi TT, G35, Accord is fugly IMO so is Civic SI and although it looks sweet, I've heard some bad things about the Celica (like rolling) though I could be wrong. Nothing wrong with a Mustang but I've had several bad experiences with Ford cars so I just can't.

Aaaaaaaaaaaanyway ... your thoughts? Some other resources I should check out? I probably won't be making a purchase (on this car, or something else if it's better) for a few months but I wanna get familiar with everything now. I'll probably buy it online cause from what I heard it's a lot cheaper than at a dealership, though I'll be sure to test drive it first of course, along with some other cars.

You can believe that know but you need to stop looking at cars with HP under 200 unless intend to drop huge sums of money into your car.

best and cheapest way to go is to get a 87-93 fox 5.0 stang. with just gears you will be able to blow the doors off most the cars you listed. and with mods it only gets bettter. the mods are cheaper and will add more hp/torque than any of those cars. 215hp/290trq is nothing small- stock

142lb ft of torque is consistent with most small displacement imports - just means there won't be the low end ball plastering feeling you'd get with a V8 - it's all up in the higher rpms. It may help to know your budget and what kind of car you want other than a "racey" car - ie more details

You can get a Subaru WRX for around this price range. With 227 HP and 217 lb-ft of torque, it would probably be more than fast enough for you. The AWD also makes it more practical in the Winter.

The WRX is far faster out of the box than an RSX.

yeah but it looks terrible.

i suppose in the under 25k segment, you could actually buy a nissan altima 3.5 SE, which would probably roast all those cars, but then again its a sedan.

How often do you use 4WD in the winter? Who wants to drive a 25k car in the snow and salt? That is why you buy a beater. The winter argument is not one that is really valid.

I understand about getting more powerful used cars but that's not an option; I'll actually end up paying more because my parents will help pay for some of it but only if it's new. The reason I'm leaning towards the RSX is because of the Integra's popularity. Since the Impreza WRX seems to be on the same "newness" level I'll look at it as well. I do want to race this car but I'm not exactly rich, so anything going up to and beyond $30k is out of my reach, seeing as how I'm in college and 19 and don't want to spend 5 years paying for a car. AWD is a plus but we don't get much snow in Cincy and the roads are never really horrendous so I don't think that'll do much for me. As for looks, I still like the RSX better but the WRX is fine I guess.

did u test drive these cars? if not go do it asap. YOU have to pick a car YOU like. I dont know why u didnt have WRX in there but I would definatly add it to the list.

personally RSX has little bit better interior/features but WRX had better seats.. performance wise WRX is better and its AWD. But RSX has that sharp cornering feel to it .

so... go test drive them

Look for a used 2002 Altima 3.5, and tell everyone that you bought it new 😛 It's got some pretty big balls 😛

If 30k is out of reach for you and you want to race your car then go ahead and buy a Civic and keep your money in the bank as a downpayment for a house. Now if you want to buy a used car then 15k-20k would allow you to "race" your car. You are going to have to pick between a "new" car and a "fast" car because of your budget.

2002 Camaro Z28 - $21k - '305' hp(severely underrated) LS1
2002 Firebird Formula - $24k same motor as above
2003 Mustang GT - $22k 260hp
2003 RSX - $22k 200hp

unless you get scared by kicka$$ acceleration, if you test drive the RSX and an LS1 back to back, i think you'll be able to make up your mind pretty easily 😉

Then I have to pick a new car. I'm not saying I won't upgrade it down the road, but I can't put down the initial investment (I'm hoping to do at least $5k down and 2 years tops). As for getting new or used I already explained the reasoning.

Well, he already eliminated the Ford due to their sub-par reliability - what makes you think he's gonna pick the pontiac of the chevy 😕

Why would you try to finance a car for two years right now when you can get 0% interest? Well, that is if you qualify. Putting 5k down is definetly a smart move but I fail to understand why you would finance a NEW car for only two years...

it's a $50 000 drivetrain dropped into a $21 000 car. what's not to be reliable? plus it's cheap speed. they'll do mid 13's off the showroom floor, get great gas mileage considering the car(equal gas mileage to a honda s2000) and are a driver's car. I'd like to see a 4 banger put up to the same abuse mustangs and fbodies get without complaining. i'm not saying the rsx, wrx etc. are bad cars, just if you want to go the fastest for the least amount of money, you can't go wrong with an f-body. or you get a mustang and then make a call to vortech for a blower kit 😉
