The "skip shift" "feature" was implemented on some cars to help out thier EPA fuel efficincy numbers. The F-bodies and Corvettes have a 1-4 shift that can be disabled simply by unplugging a solenoid.

I've always thought that was pretty stupid, but it seems like putting shift gates on cars to prevent them from being downshifted past redline would be a good thing. Don't know how much it costs though.
