Im thinking about buying a cheap used car in a few months.

My price range....under $2K.

Im actually looking at used DaeWoo's on EBAY.
You can find 1999+ DaeWoos with under 50K miles for under $2K.
How reliable are they? Anyone have any experiences with them?
Any opinions?

My dad has a Daewoo, not bad cars at all. When he first got it, it had surprisingly good acceleration, however he roughs up cars bad. Now it doesn't quite have the same spunk.

They don't make them in the US anymore. Do they even make them anymore at all?
Either way in a situation like this usually parts are expensive and hard to get. You'll also probably have a hard time finding shops that really know how to service the car too.
Edit: That said when I bring my car in for service if they have loaners available it's always those Daewoo Nipplira cars. They are ok but still they always make me glad to have my car back.

I honestly don't know where you will stand on replacement parts considering the situation Daewoo was in and what GM's intentions are. A close friend of mine has family(father & brother) who work in a garage and they have commented on the difficulty in getting parts for repair jobs.

It's a Korean car though. They're one of the easiest to maintain.

Well, I need a car that will last maybe 2-3 years.

I would think that a car 1999+ with under 50K miles would be fine for that amount of time.
I cant think of any parts I would need.

I don't know what models you are considering, maybe looking through these will give you some real world insight on daewoo. The top reviewer went for 4 months without his daewoo while he waited on a master cylinder. It was a '99.

You should be able to find a reliable car for 2000$.

It doesen't have to be late model to be reliable.

I would stay away.....

But.. see if you can find anything about people having problems on the net. There has to be a Daewoo forum somewhere... there's a forum for everything. ;)

I'll look for a Daewoo forum, thanx.

Any opinions on other reliable cars for $2K?

Have you seen the crash test rating for Daewoos? HORRIBLE is all I can say. If you want to drive a deathbox, go ahead. They have horrid reliability, dismal build quality, and lackluster overall quality.

I'd rather drive a early 90's Honda (Helll - CRX :p ) before I pay for such a turd.

Ok, I own a 1999 Daewoo Lanos S. You dont really want one, I had a problem with it & no one was able to tell me wtf was wrong with my car untill a street mechanic figured out it was a sensor. It is perfect now but during my ordeal I figured out it would be a b!tch if I ever needed parts for it. I'm going to sell mines, but I dont know what car I will be getting though.

It's a used car with a documented poor history of reliability. Over 2-3 years you're very likely to need a part or 10. Who knows how many? If you do need some, can you really find them?

How many miles did you have on your daewoo before your sensor broke?
Any other problems/complaints with the car?

If you want good reliable A-B transportation, you should have no problem finding a nice condition, early 90s Accord, Civic, Camry, Corolla, Loyale, CRX, Sentra, etc. in your price range.

The key to finding a good deal on a used car is being able to say "I'll get back to you.". Don't be afraid to look around. You'll know a good deal when you find one.

I don't know where you live, but I assume there are upper class neighborhoods in your city. If you can browse for cars on that side of town, that is often where you will find the best deals.. often times rich/old people just want to sell their old car, they don't *really* have an idea of what its worth, at least not like someone who is into regularly buying and reselling cars would.

Saturn would be a good choice. Very reliable and they still make them

Daewoo is not made any more and is not supported. So there may be some parts that may be hard to come by. But thye are very cheap for this reason. So get one for aroud $1500 and just buy another on ein 2 years when they are $500 and have a parts car. ;)

Heh, It's a Subaru.. and I suppose I don't really know how reliable that particular model is, but it was in my head because we just went and looked at a '93 for 1500$. ;)

It needed a new windshield and tires, so we turned it down.. looking for a better deal. It was in pretty good condition, with only 84k miles, but oh well.

I've heard of the Subaru Justy (almost bought one many many years ago for $1500) but never a "Loyale".

The Saturns aren't too bad. You can probably get a 96 SL series for $2000. They probably aren't as reliable as say a Toyota Corolla but the Corolla will probably cost twice as much.

Look at reliability ratings on Automotive websites or something.
