I purchased a Daewoo Leganza CDX fully loaded in 99 while working for their student sales program. After an all expense paid trip to Korea with domestic travel and tours and banquets, they sold me the $20k Leganza to me for 10k. I was only hit by the stupid 1099 at the end of that year because they counted it as a business income, so it was another 400 out of my pocket (thank God i was still a student at the time.)

The car held up well for the one year I've owned it, and put a good 15k miles on it. Acceleration was acceptable for 131HP, handling was above average because the weight really stabilizes the ride. Amenities such as leather and moonroof and cd changer was good to have with the price I paid.

Foreseeing some possible quality issues, I traded the car in 12 months later and was paid $12,500. (yes I realized it was the greatest deal ever) Daewoo Motors USA's bankrupcy filing soon followed and boy was I glad I got rid of the vehicle. But it wasn't until today that I realized all these owners have major quality issues such as broken timing belts at 40k miles???

Nothing strange about a timing belt breaking at 40k, considering they're supposed to be changed every 30k(in general).

Ok, I own a 1999 Daewoo Lanos S. You dont really want one, I had a problem with it & no one was able to tell me wtf was wrong with my car untill a street mechanic figured out it was a sensor. It is perfect now but during my ordeal I figured out it would be a b!tch if I ever needed parts for it. I'm going to sell mines, but I dont know what car I will be getting though.

How many miles did you have on your daewoo before your sensor broke?
Any other problems/complaints with the car?

54,000 miles. That was the only problem. Now that it is fixed it works perfect.

i drove a daewoo as a rental car once...@ freeway speeds, it feels dangerous and loud. The car shakes a bit at 70-80 mph.

Well Daweoo used to make cars bigtime around 3-4 yrs ago and dominated the asian market for a bit. Now they are out of the business and have been bought by GM. So I doubt you will find any new cars coming out. Enterprise car rental are turning over to Daweoo Nibura. These are brand new 2002 cars. I drove em, their mileage sucks and yes they are loud. Actually I don't even know if they are made according to US specs or not. Sure you get a Daweoo cheap but the after sales should suck. I think GM would provide whatever service to these cars. GM just introduced the Daweoo cars under the name Chevy Optra in middle east and Asia. GM partners with Opel in that part of the world.

We changed the timing belt in our 97 Civic at 100k.

Saturns are fine. Cheap and fairly reliable, IMO. On the other hand, they're fairly reliable, but cheap.

With that said, I'd definitely choose a '96 Saturn for $2000 over a '99 Daewoo for $2000.

At least if the Saturn needs a part replaced, it's inexpensive (least expensive parts in general of any car I've ever owned), and more importantly, the spare part actually exists.

Daewoo, still does make cars..
They are just sold under different names in the US, The Chevy Aveo and Susuki Verona are both rebadged Daewoos.
Saturns are ok, drove one for a while, beat the heck out of it... Headgasket was about to go at 110kl other than that and an altenator it was an ok car.
