Normally I dont care what I drive. I have a 91 5sp Escort 2dr, a 96 5sp escort 4dr, an 89 jeep cherokee, and a Ford F350. I am not into flashy cars.... except for TWO cars that I really like. 1 Is the new Thunderbird convertible, that I would never spend that kind of cash on. My vehicles were all paid for in cash the day we got them and average $600.00 per year in insurance.

The other car I really like it is the Sebring Converible. Dont know why... just really like the way it looks.

Anyway, the other day, we were out and I saw one on the car lot or the property that the b/f family owns and rents to this guy. I fell in love with it.

It is a 2001 Sebring Limited convertible. It is gorgeous. Dark blue with beige leather interior. It has stuff that the previous owner ordered specially, as well as all the bells and whistles. It has 40K miles on it. The sticker said $14,900. but the guy said he would take $13,500.

So, we call up a friend that the b/f has had since high school... they have been in the business for generations... selling cars.. he tells the boyfriend that Chrysler products are crap and have loads of mechanical problems. He also said that if this is the car that I am crazy about and fell in love with...then the b/f is just gonna have to spend, no matter what it costs... and be prepared to pay to repair often.

Which broke my heart, but if it is true... that Chrylser products suck, then I wont even bother with this car.

So... anyone know?

Here are pics of the car I am talking about... (not the actual car)

Sebring convertibles are the summer rental vehicle of North America. They're pretty reliable by this point, but have some odd quirks. Both my one-time rental and my cousin Sebring had a very, very stiff gas pedal...gave my leg muscles quite the workout to drive the thing. Otherwise, it seemed pretty solid. Definitely roomy.

a sebring =(

I vote for the new pontiac as well, or the saturn, as much as it pains me to say it, and we should see them on the market in a little while I believe.
I cant remember the name of the pontiac, but the saturn is named "Sky"
those cars are hawt.

Sebring seems to granny-carish to me. Same with the t-bird...

People always remember Chrysler from the 80's. They're fairly reliable now. After all, it's the best selling convertible in the US. It's really comfortable, and smooth. The only problem is sludge with the 2.7L V6, but if you change the oil regularly (5000 miles or less) it won't be a problem.

And I would never buy a new car. I would not spend the $$$ for something that is brand new. I like them 3-5 years old.

Our first chyrsler van went through 3 transmissions. Our second one (we know the dealer so we got a good price and like giving him business) has been better then the 1st but has had transmission troubles as well as leaking through the floor (no rust).

I don't think Chrysler's had any major across-the-board reliability problems for quite a while now. I know they had problems with early Neons, but that was fixed in the first few model years IIRC.

Sadly the Sebring is a steaming turd when it comes to quality, the 2.7 ltr V6 and the Automatic transmissions in them will be a neverending stream of headaches. Other than looking very pretty there isn't much good to be said about them.

If you need some credibility, my eldest aunt had one of these models and she later found that it had one of the worst crash test ratings. ever.

The Sebring Sedan and Vert are truly as bad as the rep the procedes them do some google searches on Chrysler 2.7 ltr engines, they are very prone to sludge up and seize up do to improper lubrication. Also their transmissions require a special fluid that is only available for purchase at a dealership, and if even slightly neglected they fail and leave you stuck in "limp mode".

the sebring is a POS and so is the thunderbird for the money. sorry to disappoint. the only domestics worth looking at are the mustang GT, the corvette, and the new slew of convertibles by GM. as for non-flashy cars, the ford focus is pretty decent for its price, and the impala is pretty decent as well.

Karen yes most Chryslers suck. One really bad part of them is the trans. If it is a 3.0 v6 as long as it is taken care of you may be ok, but after working for Dodge I found that neons, thier 4 cylinder engines, and alot of thier transmissions for most of thier fleet is what keeps Chrysler in the red.

My mechanics had neons for head gaskets and my trans guy was booked solid for weeks in advance. Hardly seen a 3.0 come in for work though and most I have come in contact with had well over 100K+ but had 3 transmissions installed during that time. Hell my wife before we got married bought a 97 neon. During the 4 years she had it we had 5 transmissions and the head gaskets done on it and a rear main seal all in under 55K miles.

So if you just have to have it set aside money for sure on trans repaires/replace because you will need it.
But the is no doubiting that alot of the Chrysler line looks great. If they can make them more reliable they would be a yop seller for sure. I love how alot of thier cars look (like the pic you linked, very sweet) but I wont buy another one myself for the trans problems. If you do get it and they offer you a extended warranty on it TAKE IT! It saved our butts here on the last two we had installed.

This is exactly what the friend told the b/f. Head gaskets and transmissions. I guess i was just hoping that all this stuff pertains to the older cars and stuff that was after 2000 would have been better.

I will not die if I do not get this car. I mean, I have no problem with what I drive now. $24.00 to fill the tank, excellent gas mileage and $600. per year in insurance. But... might be a girl thing... there is something about this car that looks pretty to me. And when I saw this one, I went ..WooHoo.. but if it suck, i wont bother with it. I dont need a car at all...

kinda just like something I really like became available at a reasonable price and was right in front of me. If it were a good car, I would have it tomorrow. If not, then I will not stress it.

:)
