With $30k to spend, what should I pick to be my first grown-up car in 2007?

Now for the background. I'm pretty content with what I have for now and can see myself content for the remainder of 2005. I'll spend 2006 overseas so I'll probably sell my cars before leaving.
Upon returning to the states, I'll need a vehicle. Here's some flexible criteria
Has to have a little staying power
I'll keep it for 5 years or so the style, engine, and company have to last that long. Are there any especially neat cars that are out on the horizon?
Semi-grown up
The cars I've owned in my life are 92 Maxima, 82 Porsche 924, 93 Prelude, 03 RSX, 00 S2000. This next car has to be somewhat sensible since I'm keeping it into my 30s, take it to some stuffy workplace, and maybe even take it into marriage.
$30k or under
Yes, this is a wide range. Don't be afraid to suggest cars that cost half of the upper limit but also don't be afraid to suggest cars close to the limit that are fuel efficient, cheap to maintain, and cheap to insure.
Anyhow, that's that. Thoughts?
