Man, you're gonna get reamed on insurance on those types of vehicles at 16. Hell, I got reamed on my old Accord at 18.

Somehow I doubt this kid will ever have to pay an insurance premium...

Actually I have to pay have my premium. Im in high school.. and I cant get any high paying jobs. Just minimum wage (6.75). Its pretty hard to balance your senior year, 5 AP Courses and a job. I know many spoiled brats, kids with brand new m3's, hummers and the occasional corvette.
Then you should get the Subaru. As a former Integra GSR owner, I can tell you that the premiums are sky high (mostly comprehensive due to ridiculous theft rate, which is another problem). I sold my old 98 GSR and got an 03 WRX and my insurance almost cut in half, if you can believe it.
The insurance on an 01 2.5RS would be even less. Link to review

btw, I have trouble believing your friend got a Type-S, even an 02 with that mileage, for that price. Low book (trade-in) is $18k. I smell either salvage or non Type-S (which prices just right).

Thanks, Ill consider looking into the Subaru. My friend got it at such a hot deal, because the person that was selling to him was leaving for college on the east coast. He couldnt take the car because his parents werent letting him to do so. He had to sell it in a matter of 2 or 3 days. So my friend was fortunate enough to hassle and get the car at such a great price.

I've been looking at the RSX for a while and I have not seen any Type-S with 23K for 16K unless the title was not clear.

If your friends car has a clear title, thats a great deal.

I'd go with a used 96-01 audi a4 as well. There are many to be found in the 8k to 15k range.

I think with that money, you can find an older car that's plenty of fast.

Try 96< Supras
Older M3s
Definitely 96< Integs, Ludes (with money left to rice out)

Either that or get the hook up with some one that knows how and where to buy auction cars (you're buying and old car anyway). Find one that's not too effed up, if you got the hook up, you can find one in very good condition that requires less than 2Ks to fix and max you'll pay for the car is 8Ks (I'm talking about 2000 to 2003 cars). But the problem is that you'll have to be able to trust the guy that's gonna auction you a car like your dad, but it's possible.

another vote for this car. its one of the best handling FWD cars ever, decent amount of power, looks sharp and your insurance wont be super high. The only downside is the sub-par resale value.

Yeah Ive actually seen it around and they look nice. I am a little bit worried about the dependability and reliability. My parents have had many Fords, and they havent lasted past 100k miles.... I'll be going to college next year so I need a reliable car. Sorry if I seem picky... but I just want the best bang for the buck. THanks guys.. the input here has been great. I'll let you know what Im considering, keep the replies comin!

Throw in another $5K (or so) and get THIS

Haha yea right. Insurance and maintenance on that car would be outrageous.

heh, lubbock is a small city (that's where I am currently)

Anyways, I would probably look into Prelude, RSX, Civic Si (not the current one, the one before), Integra Type R

It all depends on who will be paying the cost of ownership.
See if you can finance a few grand more if you already have 75% the cost of a new car.

Have you considered financing a part? Because with $13K, you're just a few grand short of a BMW 3-series with an upgraded engine. With that said, i strongly recommend a car that stands out. So forget about Hondas. They're disgusting. Every low-to-mid-class family seems to own one or two these days. So if i were you, that's what i'd go with. Few young people own BMWs. But if you can't afford it, still get something a little rarer than a Honda. Try a 97-99 Eclipse GS-T or GS-X - that's what i'm getting next year because i can't afford the Bimmer i want :)

Ditto. Buy a S13, get an rb25det(with fmic, boost controller, hardpipes, etc). Get Tein HA coils, get a LSD, get Z32 brake/5lug conversion, get some nice tires and some other misc. For ~13k you will have a car that out accelerates, out handles and costs less than vettes, porshes, f-bodys, cobras, supras, etc etc.

lol... that sure is a lot of work... and he's in California... so he better know people or he won't be able to drive that RB around... id be happy with an SR personally. :D I would go for such a project with an s13 or s14 for a weekend racer though... that would be pretty cool. :D

any pay through your nose in car payments for 60months? even at 60months financing, you'd pay $6-700 a month, not to mention insurance.. and that's if you get the m w/no options, but hey, if you can swing it, anyone would look good in an m right? ;)

Well it all depends on what you want:
As far as nice-handling fwd cars go:
Prelude SH (best handling FWD car ever made)
Civic Si (they're not that great really, underpowered and wobbly)
contour SVT <- plenty of torque, great gearbox

AWD:
Subaru 2.5 RS <-nice and torquey, awd traction and handling
Eclipse/Talon GSX/TSi AWD<- again awd handling and traction plus a ton of potential

RWD:
240sx <-great little car, good amount of potential

Real Sportscars:
z32 300zx (i have one). You can pick nice 300hp turbo car in decent condition and you will have a)fast car b) car that outhandles just about anyhting in its 1/4 mile time class
mkIV supra ... good luck finding one, probably n/a and automatic. Great looking car though
93+ RX-7 - very exotic, roatery and fast. Not to mention sexy :)

can you show me single s13 with 13k in it that will do the above...?
I think you're pulling stuff outta your ass... Stock shocks and whatever name springs wont do much, unless you are on a a perfectly flat plane, youd be lucky to get.85 on a skid pad... Also most s13s with the swaps run high 12s, so any old 5.0 mustang with 13k in it will rape it... But the 240sx will look 10x better than 80s mustang...plus go nissan anyway

<-owns 300zx

You want a fast, fun car for 13 grand or so, right? Might I suggest a DSM? Mitsu Eclipse/Eagle Talon. Turbo, AWD, great handling, styling, & performance. For $13,000 you can buy one hell of a DSM. Just make sure it was maintained properly and continue to do so and it will treat you well. Oh, and if the mods bug ever hits you a grand in mods can easily shave a full second off of your quarter mile times, if not more. People have been known to get down into the 13's for under a grand in mods. And if you really do get into modding faster times (and lighter wallets) await ;)
I love my DSM, nothing beats it in the snow/rain. It's great seeing the look on snow plow drivers' faces when I pull up next to one at a light and proceed to launch on them and pull away :D

Look into a 2nd hand Nissan / Infiniti. The depreciation on these things are ridiculous! I'm looking at an 01 Infiniti I30... they're averaging $19k with low (20k) mileage. Uses the same engine as the Maxima (VQ30DE) but with better styling in my opinion. I'll probably buy early next year.
