YACT: Fuel Filter

Curious b/c I changed oil, wiper blades, cleaned air filter etc... today. Fuel filter has been on about a year or 15K miles. Car is 02 focus with 60K miles.

Toyota has the idea that their fuel filters are a lifetime part...

Every 20k-30k or so. Usually do it during an oil change.

mine is a huge PITA to change. it's underneath the intake plenum. Toyota does say lifetime, but i'm kind of leary about that. i have 195k miles on it...might think about changing it soon. probably give me an extra mpg.

Yeah I made a thread about my Toyota Fuel Filter a while ago.

I went to the dealer, and they said it is a closed fuel system so it doesn't need changing. In my head I was thinking, "WTF is this guy talking about!? Closed as opposed to what....open? Perhaps he was referring to carburettor??

I would change it about every 30K or so. I got my truck from my Uncle and the first time it had been changed was at 70K and there was no harm done (except the bolts were rusted and stripped).

With modern vehicles with O2 sensors you will likely notice a difference in drivability before engine damage occurs. While it may damage the fuel pump if left uncorrected, I really wouldn't lose any sleep about it.

Seriously though, I think I had mine changed once a wheel ago. Don't remember. over 100k miles now.

A computer isn't that smart in cars. An o2 sensor checks after there is a problem and just tell the engine to dump more fuel or lessen. If it is running to lean it will say dump more fuel in along with air, without access to more fuel = major combustion = rebuild.

If you are getting poor gas mileage and performance, changing it can help a lot

On the Mustang, I try and do it once a year...

Actually, your fuel filter shouldn't effect your mileage at all really...

Most times the mileage goes down, it's likely the O2 sensors need to be replaced. There are other sensors that can effect mileage as well, depending on the car, but O2's have the largest influence on fuel consumption...

Some have plasmatic oxygenated diffusal cores to compensate for the trianluaristic chemical bysatrorate hypocrastism that occurs with unleaded fuels. Some do not.

91 supra w/ 193k miles, original filter. the car's been doing consistent 20-23 MPG for the 7 years I've owned it, so i'm not planning on changing it any time soon. timing belt is coming up soon, though. i have about 80k on it, but it's a non-interference design, so i've been lazy on it.

A fuel filter will not affect your mileage enough for you to notice anything. It becomes a problem when it becomes so clogged that it restricts fuel getting to the motor.
