More light output
A 35-Watt XENON HID lamp produces up to 3x the lumens at the light source when compared to a 55-Watt halogen bulb.

Whiter light
While the halogen light appears yellowish, the XENON HID lighting system produces a light that is closer to that of natural sunlight.

Increased Visibility
In most nighttime driving/bad weather situations, this combination of a whiter color and a greater light output allows for a safer and more illuminated drive.

Reduced power consumption
XENON HID lamp systems draw significantly less power from your vehicles electrical system.

Greater product life
XENON HID lamp systems are designed to outlast your vehicle. On average these bulbs will last 3-5 times longer than a traditional halogen bulb.

Also, they have a cut-off level whereas, in older lighting systems, the light would "bleed" higher and into oncoming driver's eyes. I believe this technology started in Europe, so the light would cutoff at a certain height to lessen blinding oncoming drivers.
HID headlights are also required to have "real time" aiming and leveling systems so there are fewer problems with true HID headlights being mis-aligned. Now, the imitation HID halogen headlights are simply god-awful and most of the time they are mis-aligned too since the sort of person who is suckered in by the advertising for those bulbs isn't the sort of person who is going to check to make sure that everything is aimed properly.

HID setups look sweet - if you look on the road ahead of them compared to a standard halogen bulb, the difference is insane. I wish I had some.

Also, a car's headlights need to be aimed when there's a full tank of gas (so the car's headlights aren't pointed higher than they should be when the tank is full)

Sometimes I think the auto-aim of the HIDs... esp of Lexi and Acuras and other "cheaper" HID equipped cars is ultracrappy.

It blinds me quite well considering I do have contacts with an astigmatism. Most Bimmers don't bother me since they're usually closer to the ground and the aiming is more accurate. But then I do get the occassional idiot that puts the purple friggin lamps in his HIDs to replace the factory white xenon bulbs.

Fake halogens tend to not bother me so much since they tend to be really dim if aimed properly... but ricers can't do that right.

Indeed. If you're getting blinded on the freeway, more than likely you're getting hit by fakes or a crappy install. Or both. The last is usually accompanied by an aural assault from the muffler tip of the car bearing the lights.

Wow.. see so I have a valid point ;)

Maybe I need to update my thread again ;)

that "Ride in an STI" pic is awesome... I KNOW for a fact that it's a fake HID or alignment issue now, My vehicle (Z71 Silverado) isn't exactly a LOW sitting car ;)

Yes yes yes, exactly. I have aftermarket HID's in my wrx and it makes a worlds a difference. It is a ton brighter. I do agree that I had them aimed improperlywhen i first installed them, but after 10 minutes of adjusting, they are just fine and illuminate the road very well.

I hereby retract my comments about factory HIDs. I just went down the mental list of what vehicles have blinded me, and none of them were bimmers/acuras/blah

They were all civics/neons.

Edit: But if you're going to let the riceboys have their crapass light bulbs, let me tint my windshield!

Seriously though, see if you can ride in a HID(genuine) equipped car. The difference in visability is amazing, everything is in true color and the contrast is enhanced.
Been driving for over 15 years without them, many of them on dark roads in the rocky mountains and still retain a perfect drivig record, and have never once said "I wish I had brighter lights"

you know you're getting old when ...

Just tell the ricers to aim their HIDs properly. No need to bash a properly equipped car w/ a $2000 HID option.

They're not suppose to have them. All those bulbs clearly say "for offroad use only" and are not DOT approved. Its up to law enforcement to take notice. Even so, properly aimed illegal bulbs are not distracting.

i dont really mind them. theyre a bit of a shock though when you're used to seeing the usual yellowy headlights.

i hate it when suv's stop behind me in traffic though. especially if they have the high intensities.... :| OH MY GOD THE BRIGHTNESS.

I used fake HIDs until they burned out and I didn't care about finding new ones (just put the stock ones back on). They were great for illuminating greater and wider distances. If you aim it low like it should be, it does NOT blind anyone. I'll get them again for $9 when I feel like looking for them again...

As a matter of fact, I think the real HIDs blind others moreso. There's a reason I take more notice to the more expensive cars... and it's not because they look nicer. It's the high intensity of the beams that CAN BE blinding. Read on...

Misalignment is a problem even with non-HIDs. I hate when tall vans/trucks/SUVs blind me when I'm driving the Accord. It's not a matter of brightness. Anything shining directly in your eyes is blinding. I had the decency to make sure my lights in my SUV are aligned correctly at least. Bastids giving everyone a bad name.

But as far as

I've done fine for years, I'll continue to do fine without em. we have streetlights here in Colorado too ;)

sorry, i don't write down the times of each post and analyze them, then decide whether or not to post my thoughts. anyway, your mind is set on what you think is 'good', then so be it. see you on the road.

And no my mind is not "set on what is good" I edited the first post because I was informed by others that it's not HID's that piss me off, it's inproper management of them.

Go for it, just aim them properly. ;)
