YACT: Do you change your own oil?

I used to, but the time, hastle, and mess wasn't worth the $15 I saved vs. going to the dealer.

I have been changing oil in all my vehicles for over thirty years and will continue to do so until I reach 65-70. I like getting my hands dirty, saving $$ plus I know that it is done right when I do it myself. I don't worry about a loose drain plug or dealer forgetting to put oil in...

Yes, you can! You don't have to have the dealership (or any other mechanic) change your oil to keep your car under warranty. You can change it yourself if you know what you're doing. But if you DON'T know what you're doing and you screw something up, THEN your warranty won't cover the damange (only the damage caused by your own screw-up, which would probably be extensive if you screwed up).

yeap.

I would rather do it myself then go to a place where a kid got 10 minutes of training.

need poll.

And I don't even though it is straight forward. Don't want to deal with the mess and disposing of the oil properly. Just give them my own oil and have them charge me 10 bucks for the change/disposal.

Maybe someone shouldn't have told me what YACT meant. 😉

BTW.. I change my own oil and use Amsoil synthetic oil in all my vehicles.

same. comparably expensive as in a shop(~$35 for a change) but this way I know my engine and turbo are getting the absolute best.

No way.

I was a mechanic for 10+ years, so I've changed enough oil in my life.
If I never touch a drainplug again for the rest of my life, I will die a happy man.

yup.

some cars are easier than others, depends where filter is. time....doesn't take long once you learn😛 its not rocket science, oil falls out..pour more in.

I can change the oil on my car in 15 minutes top once she's on the ramps....heck I could probably do it in 5 but I like to let the oil drain a little bit to get extra sediment/buildup out

The oil never stays around long enough to need changing.

Heh - I used to have one of those. Continuous oil change, pour it in the top, burn it out the back.

Same here. It used to burn it or leak it out so fast that there wasn't a need to ever change it.

Mine too. I just throw in a few quarts when the oil light comes on.

except you need to keep your dated receipts so that the dealer can see that you've been changing your oil at the correct interval. if there is something mechanically wrong with the engine, there will be a big deal about whether or not you've been changing your oil to the recommended specs in the manual, and what brand/type of oil you've been using.

What is your problem? every time one of these threads come up, you have to come in here and troll. if you really don't like the content of the thread, stay the fvck out.

Expedition - Yes
Jetta TDI - No

The Expedition is a pain in the ass. They put the oil filter above the front differential. Nice place guys. Do engineers design this stuff to be intentionally a pain in the ass?
