when you take it to a shop, can you specify what brand of oil/filter they use? I've always wondered that. All brands of filters are not created equal.

You can choose between what they offer. Another reason I do it myself.

Pretty sure you can just bring them the oil and filter. I know of some people on other forums who do this when its too cold to do it themselves.

God bless SoCal weather is all I'll say😉

do you guys always replace the washer and the little plastic ring?

I'd like to know as well. How necessary is it?

nobody changes the washer?

I change the crush washer every other time. I wasn't sure what he was talking about since my ring is metal, not plastic.

That is an option as well.

I do it myself. I'd be embarrassed to pay someone to do such a simple job.

Tom

If an auto center will do it for around $20, why bother. Heck they even properly dispose of the oil. I used to do it myself but considering the cost of oil and time taken for disposal it's not worth it to do it myself. Also, if I take it somewhere I keep American's employeed.

God only knows if these fvcktards:
  • Put the right oil in
  • Tighten the filter and plug
  • Bother to lube the linkage, ball & U-joints
  • Put enough oil in
  • Inspect the underside for any obvious issues...
Oh, plus I can get the job done quicker than you can drive from home to the service center, let alone wait for them to get at it!

Yes, on my two cars.

Signif other doesnt trust me on her car and she Jiffy lubes hers.

$2-3 for a filter
$1/Qt for oil

So $6 - $9 per oil change. Pep-Boys will recycle your old oil as well.

Nope. I get my oil changed every 5-6k miles, which is the same time I rotate my tires. With a coupon (always available), it's $14.95+tax, and me not having to get my hands dirty. Plus the fact that I don't have the tools to do it.
