I really enjoy building things, and when i was 13 i started building computers. I am 16 now and am i need of a car. I am currently driving a 91 volvo station wagon, but for some reason (long story dont ask haha) my mom is selling her 2003 BMW 525i bc she wants her station wagon back. She said that she wouldnt trade with me bc she doesnt want me driving a $40g car. So she said that if i paid 5g of my own money, that she would pay the rest of a car "with in reason". Only catch is that i have to get a car, so either i pay the 5g to get a car i want or she sticks me with a 1g beater. I am guessing around 10-15g is where should would feel was "reasonable". But the only cars that i like in that price range are a used integra gsr or a prelude (NOTICE: No plans to rice out, just enjoy those type of cars). I have noticed that i can pick up a prelude (just an example) engine, tranny, ecu, and all that good stuff for like 2g. I could just drop that into a really cheap prelude with alot of miles. I know that this seems overly complicated, but its mostly the fact that i want to learn engines and things like that. I know cars very well but have never actaully worked on an engine. For those that work on cars like this, are the tools and such really expensive? Is it worth it and how hard is it to learn ( I have a very good general knoledge of how an engine works, just no actual experience) ? Are there any places online or books i could get that would help me learn more? Also just any general advice would be greatly appreciated. What would be the effects of insurance if i was to drop an engine into another car? How much would insurance very if i was to drop a B18 into an integra or if i was to build a twin turbo 300zx? Thanks
Steven

Just get a <5g beater....if you get a twin turbo at that age I see you plastered on the road or wrapped around a telephone pole..

Yeah i think that the tt is out of the question at the moment. I was thinking about getting a <5g beater and putting the rest of the money into an account so that i would have more money to spend on a car when i was out of college. Any suggestions on a reliable 5k beater?

Get an EG hatchback. Drop a B16a2 motor in it. You can probably do it for less than 6-7 grand altogether. With the rest of the $ you can put it away and save it.

your mom may ask what happened to the other 10 or 15 large when you roll up in a 4K beater

That would be a very good idea. You could get a mid 90's honda civic, accord, toyota camry, etc...they last forever, are cheap to buy and maintain, great on gas too. You'll be very happy in a few years when you have a big fat bank account waiting for you :)

Who said anything about essay form?

If you're happy about people not wanting to read through whatever Lincoln log you've created, that's fine.

Haha never though of it that way. What i ment was that i know the different parts very well and what they do and how they work with each other, but i have never actaully taken an engine apart.

Its not the same. I'm learing all about prepping a motor I bought recently. After I finish my project then I'll feel like I know something.

I suggest putting an ad in the paper saying you will pick up peoples junk lawn equipment. Lawnmowers, weed eaters, whatever you can get your hands on.

Then fix them. :)

Trust me, knowing and understanding the workings of an engine is a huge step forward. Many people don't really even understand the basic 4-cycle process, or at least have misconceptions.

get a beater, and use the rest of the money for usefull stuff like food and what not in school, or is mommy gonna pay for that too?

And knowing how an engine works and transplanting one are two different games.

Youl'll need a engine hoist, a garage, knowledge of the tranny, cause you'll have to mate it up to the engine, Fuel system, electrical.

Look just bc my mom was gonna pay for most of my car doesnt mean that she pays for everything. I can assure you that i pay for almost everything i own. She was just going to treat me to a new car bc she knew i hate the station wagon and she really liked it.

And back to the car...Yeah that is what i would like to learn. I understand the concepts of how they work but i want to learn first hand how they work. Ok well i have decided to get a beater for all those who think im just some rich spoiled kid. I will be paying for this beater too.

Would i be better off with an old accord or civic? Would it be a safe bet to buy a used car with maybe 50-60k miles on it? Thanks

Yet, people think they can get away with it. This may not be school, but I can't read drivel written by a three year old.

I suggest you learn a little about cars/engines before you decide to just "drop' an engine in one. If there is a harnass and adapter kit it is much easier... if no one has ever done the swap before, then expect to spend some cash or some time yourself to do it. I think you would be better just having a car that will get you from point A to point B and it fairly nice.
